UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH[]

Prologue[]

Waldstein: The Princess of the Night Blade... No, Linne… She's nowhere to be found. The boy with the blonde hair isn't here, either. Did those two go into the Hollow Night together?

As expected… That girl hasn't passed up a chance to dive into the jaws of danger yet… God… Even having lived this long, I still do not understand the ways of women.

I feel I've taught her well enough that she would hold her own against the In-births. But it'd be foolish to underestimate our opponent. I can't afford to have them come within an inch of her. Amnesia and their Vessel, Paradox. Even the actions of the Night Blade worry me.

Kuon, my comrade in arms… Is this, too, a part of your plan?

There's no point in thinking about this too much… Once again it's my duty to plunge into the Abyss, and put an end to Paradox's treachery. Linne's absence could be a blessing, as it's one less person to babysit.

I can feel the blood beginning to rush through my veins. It's been a while since I've had the chance to unleash my power. That woman's wickedness will surely fall to my claws! BWAHAHAHA!

Stage 3[]

Gordeau: Well, what a surprise… Waldstein the Hecatoncheir, sworn enemy of the Night Blade. Not sure whether I'd consider myself lucky, running into a monster like you here…

Waldstein: What's this? You radiate the aura of a warrior. You already know my name, but I've yet to learn yours.

Gordeau: Mine? Aw, come on. Let's not ruin the ambience by doing introductions now. I'm more interested in why an old man with those massive claws is wandering around on a Night like this.

Waldstein: Heh, you've given it too much thought. I'm just here to rampage. It's my job to distract Amnesia from the Princess's movements.

Though needless to say, if the chance presented itself, I'd gladly take Paradox's head. GWAHAHAHAHA!

Gordeau: So, it's a diversion you're creating… Did you really think it wise to tell me all this? I'd have been a lot more subtle if I were you.

Waldstein: Hm? Really? …Why?

Gordeau: Whoa, now… You're one of the good ones, aren't you? If the enemy knows you're berserking for their attention, they're not gonna fall for your tricks. Telling them all about it would defeat your purpose.

Waldstein: Hm… That possibility never occurred to me…

Gordeau:

I am also, to a certain extent, affiliated with Amnesia. Then again, I'm not so allegiant that I'd tell them your plans, either.

Waldstein: What, you're actually a part of Amnesia…? Talk about a stroke of luck for me. You and Enkidu both have an eye for talent, it seems. How regrettable that you're my enemy. Heh, heh, heh…

Gordeau: Oh yeah, old man Enkidu. He likes to mess around with my head, too. Christ, why is it that I only seem to attract old men?

Waldstein: HAHAHAHA! It's a part of your charm. I, too, have fallen for your masculine wiles. Now, let's see if you can satisfy this burning I have deep in my heart!

Gordeau: It doesn't look like you're going to give me much of a choice. But if I win, you leave me the hell alone. Deal?

Stage 6[]

Carmine: Hey, there! What the hell…?! You look strong. Seriously, are you even human? Did you escape from a zoo or something?

Waldstein: Hmm…? Are you referring to me? You look as though you have potential, young one, but you must go and train that thin, fragile-looking body of yours. Indeed, what one must eat to appear as frail as you…

Carmine: Heh, heh…AHAHAHA! This is classic! Right back at 'ya! What the hell'd you eat to become as monstrous as you are, old man?!

You do have two legs and talk like a human, so I guess aside from your looks, you'd pass for human. Not like it'll matter in a minute, because I'm going to END you!

(Carmine launches a blood crystal at Waldstein, who easily blocks it)

Waldstein: Hmph. To attack someone while their guard's down… Hardly honorable, young one. But, what is this? You wield a bizarre power befitting of your… unsettling physique.

Carmine: You managed to stop my Blood Spike with one hand? Heh, now that's what I'm talkin' about. I've killed tons of people like you… So why don't you go ahead and die right here, old man?!

Waldstein: Child's play… True power comes from a well-trained body. You'll need to recognize the weaknesses that leave you vulnerable.

Carmine: I'll skewer you like a mouse's guts on a cat's claw!

Waldstein: Then be prepared to be torn apart, you flimsy paper doll.

Stage 9[]

Waldstein: Youngster… To think I'd run into you before heading into the Abyss…

Seth: Waldstein… You've abandoned the path of Eternity and are now just another heretic Vessel. You willingly became a monster, yet you still feel regrets in this world?

Waldstein: Regrets..? Perhaps I have a few. Linne, Kuon, and Adelheid… But I could care less about you, you little punk! HAHAHAHA…

And this evening… Has the Princess already made her way here?

Seth: Yeah, she arrived a moment ago. Along with the Insulator. They're making their way to the Altar of Light and Darkness, where Paradox awaits.

Waldstein: The Night Blade conspiring with Amnesia? I cannot fathom this. I would like to hear more about it. Perhaps it is Kuon's will that drives you?

Seth: …As a fellow soldier, do you honestly believe I'd tell you anything, just because you asked?

Waldstein: You little bastard… Though I am pleased that you've grown to be able to talk the talk. As a fellow Night Blade, I worried about your lack of strength, but I see I was wrong. Now, to rip you limb from limb!

Seth: You intend on going after Linne, Hecatoncheir? You might already be too late. I'm sure even you can tell she's still no match for Paradox.

Waldstein: Hmph. Both that little girl and I have experience in defying the odds. She is especially tough. If I were you, I'd be far more worried about my own well-being.

It's not in my power to go easy on anyone right now!

Final Stage[]

Hilda: Hecatoncheir, the infamous guardian of the Princess of the Night Blade. If you're looking for your precious little princess, she's sleeping over there. Were you worried sick about her?

Waldstein: So, you're the nefarious Paradox… What a joke. And if the Princess could be so easily killed, I would've cut ties with her a long time ago.

Hilda: Well now, that's convenient. I wished to speak of abandonment as well… The Night Blade is rotting away from the inside… Why not leave her and join Amnesia? Lord knows you look villainous enough.

I am in need of a ferocious hunting dog. I couldn't care less about obedience or loyalty. Just as you wish, I'll let you live and die on your beloved battlefield, so why not go berserk on my behalf?

Waldstein: So I get to unleash my powers however I choose…? Actually, that's not a bad deal. How pleasing it is to know that I could aim for your neck as well.

Hilda: Isn't it? I'm not going to try to be sweet with you, either. Leave the Night Blade and join Amnesia. You can berserk to your heart's content until you die. Not a bad life for a powerful giant like you, right?

Waldstein: Hm… For once, you actually make a good point. But I need to see if you're worthy enough to be a Vessel. If I defeat you here, then you are not worth my time.

I also cannot wait to bear my claws against your monster, Enkidu. Until that match is settled, I will not let this flesh wither and die! AHAHAHAHA!

Hilda: I did figure you'd say that. If that is what you desire, I'll gladly be your opponent. We of Amnesia will become Re-birth… I'll give you a moment to allow your fear of me to take over!

Epilogue[]

Waldstein: You thought you could become a Re-birth with your powers? One's EXS abilities come from a sound mind and body. You were no match for my strength!

Then again, it looks like you can no longer hear anything I say… Sleep for eternity, Paradox.

-----[]

Linne: Ugh… Where am I…? Did I force you to save me yet again, Wald? I apologize for causing you trouble…

Waldstein: You're finally awake? Don't worry about the details… Are you hurt at all?

Linne: I'm fine. But more importantly, did you finally settle things with that woman once and for all?

Waldstein: Of course. I was about to kill her, but I saw that she spared your life, so I decided to return the favor. I don't know what her plans are now, but there may be hope for her still.

Linne: I see. Was my br… was Kuon around?

Waldstein: I didn't see him, but I did sense his shadow. I think we can assume he is carrying out his own agenda somehow… If would be bothersome if the Re-birth controlling the Night Blade was involved…

But don't you worry about a thing, little one. I will protect you as well as the art of death and rebirth that lies within you, former allies be damned… Hm? What's wrong?

Ah… still exhausted, are we? Heh, heh, heh… This is why I still think of you as a little girl.

Waldstein: (Princess of the Night Blade, I cannot imagine the burden your tiny body is forced to bear. The burden that grows on you as you experience more Hollow Nights… How much longer can you go on?)

(Kuon the Eternal… Hilda of Amnesia… and the bearer of the Insulator… Everything is converging toward a single point. This must be an omen. The start of the event forseen by the ancient Night Blade.)

(HAHAHA! It seems like there's still plenty of work left for this old man to do. Adelheid, I don't think I can give you back this life just yet!)

(Ending theme: Heart beat breaker)

UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II SYS:CELES[]

Prologue[]

Waldstein: It appears I've finally reached my resting place… and your final destination as well, here in this Abyss.

Kuon: Yes… Eternity was a long, long time to wait, but at last it's here: the final Night. But it isn't just an end for us. It's also a beginning. It's the Night our journey begins…

Waldstein: Hmmn… You can keep your new beginnings. This flesh of mine will soon be dust. If you're off on a journey, then go alone. All I seek is true resolution.

Kuon: Oh, please. You got all the resolution you need long ago… with my victory.

Waldstein: Keh heh heh… You're as cheeky as I remembered. Fine. I shall honor our ancient promise and lend you my strength this evening. But do not forget that we have unresolved business.

Kuon: Great. I'm counting on you. As for your true resolution… I hope you'll reconsider. Thanks for everything, Waldstein. I must be going.

(Kuon leaves)

Waldstein: Right. Farewell. Now then… The powerful await. I won't keep them waiting any longer.

(What is his true will? Would he really cross over to the other side, even if it costs the entire world? If so, I must stop him. To think our true resolution would turn out like this…)

…Though I suppose it has its merits. Now, onward to my final battlefield! I will charge forth, without fear or regret, until my blood stills in my veins!

Stage 3[]

Waldstein: Young girl… You must be from Licht Kreis. I wouldn't think to see such as you here in the final Night. Keh heh heh… I suppose I'm bound to do battle with the likes of you.

Kaguya: Such mountainous stature… You must be Waldstein the Hekatoncheir. I've heard that your connection with our organization runs quite deep. What brings you here now?

Waldstein: Hmph. I've nothing to say to you. You're the one who disturbed me. I'll give you one more chance to walk away. If you value your life, you'll take it.

…Not that I'd expect someone like you to know what's good for them.

Kaguya: Naturally. Even among The Named, you're a highly wanted person. Not to mention I already know you're colluding with Aeon this evening. I cannot let such a rare encounter go to waste!

Ahead lies the Great Abyss, now under assault by the whole of Licht Kreis' forces. I must apprehend you… No, defeat you here, to turn the tides of battle to our favor and claim total victory for Licht Kreis.

Waldstein: Oho… Not a bad read on the situation, young girl. If you can take me down, you'll surely win tonight. But that's a big "if" indeed, keh heh heh…

Kaguya: Oh my… Where there's an "if," there's a way. So you think I have a chance? Tee hee hee…

Waldstein: I wouldn't go that far, keh heh heh…

Kaguya: I see… Well, I can't say I quite agree with your predictions. In that case, I simply must try and disprove them! Garibaldi Right! Garibaldi Left! Get ready to wreak havoc!

Waldstein: To think I'd face one from Licht Kreis on this, my final Night… Very well. Consider this a parting gift from one who went before you.

I will carve! Into your mind! And soul! An unforgettable despair!

Stage 6[]

Waldstein: Well, well. If it isn't the Princess of the Night Blade.

Linne: Hold it… You say that like we're complete strangers. We've both essentially lived for an eternity. You could at least show me some superficial friendliness…

Waldstein: Fool… The only reason that I accompanied you for so long was to honor my promise to your brother Kuon. Now that promise is done, and I've no reason to be friendly with you.

Besides, warming up to you now would only make it harder to finish you off. You understand, don't you?

Linne: I'm feeling sick all of a sudden. I can't tell if that's because it's going to rain tomorrow, or because of that tasteless joke of yours.

Waldstein: Keh heh heh… As long as you get my point.

Linne: I don't mind that you chose to take Kuon's side. You have your path and the determination to walk it.

Of course, I'm determined to walk my own path, too. And it just so happens that our paths cross, cutting each other off, so that only one of us can move forward. Am I wrong?

Waldstein: You're exactly right. Your path ends right here. I've no interest in you as a warrior, but you're the one my friend is after. I won't bother asking you to surrender. Resist with all your might if you will.

Linne: I will, thanks… After our last parting, it'd be a shame for both of us if we left things unsettled. Especially on our final Night. Allow me to settle things once and for all… with this blade.

Waldstein: Keh heh heh… Such audacity for such a little girl. Excellent. I shall allow myself to forget the name of the Night Blade, and give my claws over to bestial delight!

Linne: Good… This isn't a fight for the future, but for the end. And this is the most suitable ending for us both.

…What a backward thing to say. We've both lived for far too long…

Final Stage[]

Kuon: Ah, my friend Waldstein… So you came. It looks like you've taken care of all distractions.

…Except for one, I suppose.

Waldstein: Hmmn, why, of course. You probably see through to my careless intentions.

Kuon: Of course I do. You and I have bound our lives together. I'd prefer it if you came out and told me directly, though.

Waldstein: I owe you that much. I parted ways with the Night Blade and joined you, my true ally. I knew the joy of bloody combat. But the more I fight, the more these claws come to thirst for battle with you.

The old crossing of our blades… Your blood, and the pain on your face as you collapse to the ground… The drive for true resolution… The grudges, the cravings… My mind tells me to let go of it all…

But to give up this opportunity… To give you up and let you cross to the far side of Night, to surrender you to Higan… You understand I could never let that happen…

Do you? Do you understand what I want? If you would move forward, you'll have to defeat me first, Kuon.

Kuon: I understand. I'm not so tactless that I'd turn a blind eye to your conviction and refuse. You've earned that much with all your help. I'm sorry for making you wait for so long, Waldstein.

We may no longer look at all like we did back then… but our hearts remain unchanged. I'll gladly satisfy your unwavering conviction.

Waldstein: Keh heh heh… I am grateful. This is my final wish: may my claws tear you to shreds! If you have any conviction of your own, we'll see if it surpasses mine!

Kuon: Yes, Waldstein, my friend… I'll make it through to the end of my journey!

Epilogue[]

Kuon: I've lost… The resolve I've carried for ages, borne farther than the farthest distance, collapses here… But if you're the one to end it, maybe it's not so bad…

Waldstein: Hmph. Hardly. This was merely payback for my last defeat. Now we're tied one to one. The next battle will be the true decider. Though I'd say my victory is already certain…

Kuon: Ha ha ha… You were too preoccupied with my power back then. I only narrowly managed to win because I took advantage of that. At this point, there's no chance I'd win.

Waldstein: It was my own immaturity that caused my defeat. You were plenty strong then, and you're plenty strong now.

Now, then… We'll have to pay for this disturbance. The pit is open, and the Power of Sealing has been unleashed to swirl around us. At this rate, it'll surely beckon the Immortalize

Kuon: Then I'll hold tight to that power and fall into the Abyss. I'll never achieve my true desire, so instead I'll melt into the darkness and become one with the Night.

Waldstein: Hmm… No, I cannot simply watch you go to the other side. It's too early for you to die. For one thing, you should at least go see your sister first. Give me the power and let me fall with it.

What? I'm simply returning to you the life you once saved. I've lived long enough; this flesh has reached its limit. It's too early for you. It's the right time for me.

Farewell, my friend… We shall meet again, somewhere on the other side…

…Eternal power of EXS, secret art of the Night Blade! Abandon your old vessel and claim my flesh for your own!

(The screen turns white as Waldstein sacrifices himself to stop the Immortalize)

(Farewell Kuon, my dear friend. Thanks to you, I enjoyed my life to the fullest…)

(But what of the girl, Linne? Will the fragment of the Power of Sealing that dwells within her disappear, too? Go on, then. Struggle to your heart's content. I've got a head start.)

(And then Adelheid, so distant even now… No, at least this last time, I should call you by your title: Princess Adelheid.)

(I'm sorry for taking off on my own. I was a mere vessel for my own stunted valor. I didn't have the capacity to consider anyone else…)

(I should have seen you one last time before my life ended… to bid you a proper farewell… Keh heh heh… Well, that was a long time ago…)

(Forgive… me…)

(…)

-----[]

Adelheid: A shooting star…

It shines dim and gray. Always an ill sign. He must have been freed from the bonds of eternity…

Silvaria, are you there? A distinguished and well-loved warrior of Licht Kreis has crossed the Night and become a star… Please prepare for his funeral rites.

Hee… Though knowing your dedication to the martial arts, I'm sure you won't go off into the heavens without a fight.

I know in my heart of hearts that you will come to see me once again.
