Comment from the Composer, Raito[]
UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH started to operate as an arcade game on September 2012. After launching a fighting game in the arcades, the usual flow was to wait some time before releasing a console port. That's why the BGM in UNI were produced with the intent that they're listened in arcades. Numerous games are gathered in arcades and several sounds overlap with each other. To create BGM and sound effect that would reach player's ears within that place... As a game, the sound effect were a higher priority than the BGM so the first step was to get them to stand out. I had to think about BGMs that you could hear between the sound effects to leave an impression on the players. Encounters in arcades are precious. You need to be able to leave an impression for the first-time players.
Quite a long time has passed since the times I worked on the sound effects for original UNI, and we started working on UNI2. During that time happened a huge, positive change. The great popularity overseas and being chosen for large-scale events created the need to focus on the world stage when creating sounds. On the other hand, the course of decline has continued with the arcades. Nowadays players start from the console version. I needed to think what happens to my BGM created with the arcades in mind. Unlike in the arcades, playing a console game isn't usually interrupted by various noises so it's possible to create much more delicate sounds and songs. Is it alright to shift the production style to focus on console environment? In conclusion, the BGM in UNI2 were created with the usual style taking arcade environment into consideration. Porting BGMs created for console environment to an arcade port could lead to several problems, but on the other hand, arcade environment BGMs don't affect console players that much. I also had to think about the balance between existing BGMs and new characters' songs. This might be old-fashioned way of thinking, but I hope people continue to play UNI in the arcades. Existing characters' BGM received rearrange and a re-recording. The biggest change was the length of songs. Considering the highest peak of the song, the usual song length was about 110~130 seconds. We extended them to 180~220 seconds with additional new parts on the latter half. With this, the peak of a song comes about twice during a match instead of just looping the song.
The overall composition direction was to avoid giving the players a feeling that song sounds out of place. In UNI, the songs are character themes instead of being stage themes. That binding is strong. As a new release, we want the songs to have something new, but making too big changes might end up damaging the impression on the character whose theme is in question. Balancing around that issue was hard. Regarding the recording of this soundtrack. As the tracks have gotten longer, recording two loops of a song would decrease the number of tracks for a disc. This time BGMs don't loop, but instead we build the tracks so that they have proper endings. Because of these circumstances, the tracks have a little different composition than in the game. I think it's interesting to listen to each and compare them. As for the new characters BGMs, they have been created with the same standards as the rest of the BGMs. In UNI2, Hilda is no longer a boss character and her theme has been created anew while referring to phrases from her previous theme. Kuon's BGM is something people figure out if they know. It's that song. I hope for you enjoy UNI2 for a long time.
