UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II [Sys:Celes] (アンダーナイトインヴァース II シスタセレス), usually shortened to UNI2, is the sequel to UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH and serves as the conclusion to the events of the first game.[2] The game released worldwide on January 25th, 2024, with the Deluxe Edition for consoles releasing in early access on January 22nd, 2024.

Story[]

The page turns on the final chapter of the tale of the Hollow Night...

Hilda the Paradox, the witch once known as the strongest being alive, had sought complete subjugation. However, her ambition was halted, her dreams crushed. A single defiant, wielding the key of the Night, Insulator, left her plans in tatters.

Gradually did the commotion of the Night subside, and peace seemed to be within sight. Lurking within the shadows, however, was the true foe... Waiting, biding their time, until at long last came the chance to fulfill their deepest desire. Kuon, the "Eternal Re-Birth."

Upon the corpses of countless In-Births does he announce his advent under the cover of twilight:

"When next the Night arrives, mankind shall be branded with the mark of ruin. Flames will soar from the depths, razing the earth in a heptad of hellfire until the Night consumes all. Cosmic collapse is nigh. Soon, the Immortalize will commence..."

A wall divides the realms. And yet this man seeks to pierce the veil in a quest for ultimate vengeance. And should he succeed, an infinite emptiness threatens to return all to nothing. Ruin, extinction, despair... Oblivion awaits.

In-Births rise in retaliation, concerned for the fate of their world. Although their goals may differ, the blight that is Kuon must be stopped before his evil takes root.

Sever the cycle. An end to the endless. May the tale of these countless Nights be concluded, on this eve, the moment of destiny.[3]

Summary[]

Created in collaboration with developer French-Bread, the game will feature the final chapter in the “Hollow Night” storyline that began with the original series release over a decade ago!

As a light novel-style action fighting game, Under Night In-Birth II Sys:Celes brings a fully original addition to the fight game genre, weaving a climactic tale of surviving the Hollow Night and dueling powerful foes accented by fantastic visual environments, 21 returning characters and new In-Births joining to bolster an already potent roster, and compelling background music. Players take the role of high school youth and story protagonist Hyde as he encounters the mysterious girl, Linne, prompting his inner EXS powers to suddenly awaken. The two band together in a grueling struggle to defeat the fearsome and so-called strongest user of all, Paradox. However, an enigmatic force known as Kuon the Aeon appears and crushes the two victors, proclaiming his advent of the world’s end. This leads to Linne’s disappearance where Hyde, now determined to save their world from Kuon, ventures alone into the Night…

The latest series entry also boasts a unique battle system brought to life by revamped, high-quality pixel art visuals and dynamically detailed facial expressions. Players will also realize the sequel’s true combat splendor through its expanded move list, new character abilities and finely-tuned balances, evolved battle system, and implementation of Rollback Netcode. Simply by pushing the EXS button, even beginners can perform stylish moves with ease, resulting in a sense of speed not found in other traditional 2D fighting games. In addition, newly enhanced network features (alongside Rollback Netcode) allow players to test their skills against global online opponents in smooth Rank Matches and Player Matches!

Information[]

[Sys:Celes] was first alluded to on September 21, 2021 by FRENCH-BREAD director Nobuya Narita and composer Raito on Twitter, with the latter confirming outright that a new installment of the UNI series was in development. Narita expressed interest in the announcement of said title coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the original release of the game.

The game was officially revealed during the first day of EVO World Championships 2023 by Kamone Serizawa and Seiichi Yoshihara.

[Sys:Celes] introduces several new mechanics that build upon the foundations of the previous game such as:

  • Celestial Vorpal State, which completely fills the GRD gauge on your end should you win the Vorpal cycle with six or more blocks of GRD. Unlike normal Vorpal state, both fighters cannot enter Celestial Vorpal at the same time even if they both have exactly six blocks of GRD by the time the TS cycle finishes.
  • Creeping Edge, done with 3D, which allows you to forward-dodge roll past an attack at the risk of potentially losing GRD.
  • New Force Functions with different inputs were added for a number of characters.
  • The Guard Thrust input has been changed from 214D to 6ABC.
  • Several EX-only special move inputs have been changed from using the C button in conjunction with more involved inputs (For example, Hyde's "Veil Bringer" originally being 41236C) to having more universal 214B+C/236B+C inputs.
  • Smart Steer has been reworked with the introduction of the new Finisher move, which acts as the fourth move executed in a Smart Steer and can be used in regular combos with the A+B input, with the player either gaining or losing GRD depending on how early or late in a combo it is used.

Other quality of life improvements have been added such as custom color slots and, most notably, rollback netcode. In addition, all of the character themes have been completely remade and voice lines have been rerecorded. Stages have been graphically updated too, with additional stages added to boot. All 21 characters (including guest characters Eltnum and Akatsuki) from the first game and its subsequent updates return, with three new characters being added in the form of Tsurugi, Kaguya, and Kuon.

A Season Pass allows players access to three additional post-launch characters: Uzuki (releasing July 2024), Ogre (releasing February 2025), and Izumi (releasing August 2025).[4] The Season Pass also provides immediate access to Kuon, who would normally have to be unlocked in-game otherwise.

An open beta was held for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 from November 17th to November 20th, 2023.

Those who own the Deluxe Edition on either the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 were able to play the game up to 72 hours early on January 22nd.
