Nanase (ナナセ) is a middle school student who got awakened as an In-Birth by an accident. Now she chases after Hyde for vengeance, believing him to be the cause for her new powers. She wears her school uniform to the Hollow Night.
She was first introduced as a playable character in the console version of UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH Exe:Late.

UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH
A mysterious girl, chasing after Hyde for reasons unbeknownst. While she cries, "If you're a man, take responsibility!", the exact details of the quarrel is unknown -- that is between the two of them. She wields a long sword with ease, and fights opponents with a style that almost toys with her opponents. Underneath this Night, she finally finds the man she's looking for, the kid with a "Red Sword". Following the rumors, she dives into danger head first, making her way to the Abyss.[1]
UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II [Sys:Celes]
A mysterious girl who has stubbornly targeted Hyde, Nanase has finally succeeded in capturing her prey.
The two of them arrive at a temporary truce; however, this peace was not to last. Rumors that the Re-Birth Kuon has appeared and promises to wreak havoc upon the world reach Nanase's ears. And if Kuon destroys the world, all of Nanase's beloved sweets will be destroyed along with it! As if that didn't give her reason enough to fight, she has an even deeper worry: What if the world is destroyed before she can vent the special feelings stirring inside her?
To settle all matters with "the one," Nanase sets out into the final Hollow Night.
Appearance[]
Nanase is a young girl with light brown hair in pigtails and green eyes. She wears a school uniform that consists of a white shirt with a tan vest and a light green bow tie, a green miniskirt, and small brown combat boots with wings attached to them.
When she was younger, Nanase used to have short hair in a considerably "boyish" style, which was tied to how she used to act.
Personality[]
Nanase has a tendency to jump to conclusions and doesn't consider alternate possibilities, such as the Void that bit her being the reason she's an In-Birth instead of Hyde. Due to her lack of information, she thinks that Hyde is also responsible for others' abilities. When distressed, she tends to have a poor choice of words when expressing it.
Story[]
- UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH (Exe:Late [st/cl-r])
Approximately two weeks before the game's story, Nanase was attacked by a Void. Fortunately, Hyde managed to save her although the Void's bite triggered her transformation into an In-Birth. Due to her lack of information regarding In-Birth, she believed that Hyde was responsible for her becoming a "monster" and has since been stalking him to exact her revenge and force him to "take responsibility".
When the Hollow Night begins, Nanase feels that it is the ideal time to settle her vendetta against Hyde and seeks him out, completely unaware of the dangers the Night brings. On the way she encounters Vatista (who herself had just recently encountered Hyde). When Vatista doesn't reveal Hyde's location, Nanase fights her. Later, Nanase meets Linne and identifies her as the girl who's always with Hyde. Nanase expresses her distress at her being an In-Birth. When Linne refuses to reveal Hyde's location, Nanase fights her as well. Afterwards, Nanase encounters Orie and once again expresses her distress. When Nanase is once again denied Hyde's location, she fights Orie.
Nanase then reaches the Altar and encounters Hilda. When Nanase's frustration at not finding Hyde finally reaching it's peak, she fights Hilda as a warm-up for her future fight with Hyde and wins. Hyde then shows up and is surprised to see Hilda already defeated. Having found the object of her vendetta, Nanase demands that Hyde take responsibility for his actions. Vatista, Linne, and Orie then show up, each asking Hyde if what Nanase told them was true. Hyde, who is completely unaware why they are all angry at him, decides to try calming Nanase down by fighting her. When Nanase wins, Hyde flees with the four girls chasing after him.
The girls lose sight of Hyde and Nanase begins complaining about how, because of Hyde, she's now an In-Birth. Realizing that the entire situation was all a misunderstanding, the girls explain to Nanase the real reason why she's an In-Birth. Accepting that Hyde isn't the one at fault, Nanase decides to let go of her misguided grudge but insists that she isn't doing it to be nice.
UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II: Sys:Celes
Abilities[]
Nanase's ability is the EXS of Vengeance: Windmill (旋纏のEXS 「ウインドミル」), which grants her the power to control and manipulate the wind. According to her concept art, she can create wing-shaped objects known as Winglets (ヴィングレット), which can be seen on her boots.
She fights with a large blade named Zephyr (ゼファー). The use of her wind powers allows Nanase to make the blade feel lighter and easier to swing.

Composer Commentary[]
Gallant Girl ~Sora yori Nagare, Hashiru Kaze~
There is usually pretty big range in the themes of female UNI characters, but Nanase is really distinctive character. Unlike other characters, Nanase doesn't have darkness in her. I imaged the very "core" of her, the refreshing girl with no worries.
I think the chord allows the listener to envision a "hunch", because the song utilizes a special chord progression. The bass line is a rising chord progression called Future Progression (Raito Naming) is playing the sounds from the next chord progression.
Occasionally one can image the white noises of wind move from left to right, but I can't actually do that because it would overlap with the game's regular sound effects. [2]

基本アンダーナイトの女性キャラクターは音楽性に幅があるのですが、ナナセはさらに異色なキャラクターなので、他のキャラクターとは違うあまり影を感じさせない爽やかで悩みの無い感じ、だけど芯はあるというイメージで制作しました。
未来進行（来兎命名）という上昇していくコード進行のベースラインが次のコード進行の音を奏でる特殊なコード進行を多用してるため「予感」を想起するんじゃないかと思います。
通常効果音とかぶるからやらないんですけど、風をイメージしたホワイトノイズが時折左右を動き回ります。Introduction Text[]

- Nanase's blade gets its name from the Greek god "Zephyrys", who was a messenger of Spring and a personification of the west wind - the most gentle wind.
- Prior to Version 1.03 of Sys:Celes, Nanase's new sprites added in said installment had her socks missing.
