UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH[]

Prologue[]

Hyde: Guess the time's finally come. The "Hollow Night" will begin soon.

It's been a month since Linne saved me and hijacked my life with all that godforsaken training. Now I get why. It looks like a swarm of EXS-wielders have gathered near the city center.

That idiot. And Wald. Where the hell are they?! Did they really just take off on their own?

I know you told me to stay put 'cause it was dangerous, but there's no way in hell I can do that. I have to be the one that settles it with that Paradox bitch myself.

Damn it, Linne, you'd better be waiting for me! That goes for you, too, Wald! Don't do anything stupid before I get there!

Stage 3[]

Hyde: H-Hey, Yuzu! Sorry, I mean… Yuzuriha?

Yuzuriha: Hm… Now, who might you be? I don't recall meeting you before. Yes, for I am but a humble swordswoman. "Hi-yah!"

Hyde: Stop playing dumb! And swordsmen don't say "Hi-yah!"

Yuzuriha: Ah. Then perhaps… "Draw!"

Hyde: That's not it, either! Argh…! Man, I wasn't expecting to run into a monster like you… This Hollow Night's a real pain.

Yuzuriha: Hm, yes, indeed… Naught stands before you but a single, monolithic monster. A demon of misfortune who wanders the Hollow Night, killing anything that moves.

Hyde: All right, then. Just pretend that everything I'm about to say is me thinking out loud… I've never forgotten about what happened before. I'm sorry… and I always have been.

I lost sight of myself, and well… What I did was pretty messed up. Even afterwards, I ran and hid like a coward. Pretty pathetic, huh?

Yuzuriha: Ahahaha. You can say that again.

Hyde: But that's all in the past now. I know it might be too late, but I've found a reason to fight. And not because THAT person told me to, either. I fight because I want to.

Yuzuriha: Yeah, I can see it in your eyes that you've cast away all doubt. That's good. Until now, your eyes were like… Hmm. Yes, like those of a dead fish!

…Not that I would know such a thing. 'Tis the guess of the humble demon stranger before you.

Ah, I can feel the passion burning in your eyes! It shall make cutting you to pieces all the more satisfying. Prepare to be baptized on this Night. You will do well as my foe.

…Or so a demon who's never met you would guess.

Hyde: Well, bring it on… For the record, I'm not trying to erase everything I've done in the past by battling you, all right? It just means I start fresh here! I hope you're ready, Nameless Demon!

Yuzuriha: Understood. I shall grant your wish, and OBLITERATE any hope you may have! Let us begin, nameless man-child!

Stage 6[]

Hyde: O-Orie, is that you? What are you doing here? And what the hell's with that get-up?

Orie: H-Hyde…?! I was about to ask you the same thing… That sword. What is the meaning of this?

Hyde: Well, I have this thing on this Night, so if the answer's not obvious, I don't know what is. But Orie, I never would've guessed in a million years you were an In-birth.

Orie: Once again, I was going to say the same. That cannot be the infamous sword, the Insulator? It appears your connection with the "Princess of the Night Blade" has made you very much a wild card.

Hyde: You got me. But she's really not all that bad, you know? She fights alone because she's forced to… Which is why I want to help her!

Orie: I am aware that the Night Blade and its leader are not evil. The one we must worry about is Paradox. The two parties are going to meet tonight. You understand why this cannot be overlooked, yes?

Hyde: More or less. But as long as we're under this Night, it's obvious that both sides have a reason for fighting, and neither of them'll budge. So now that we're on the same page, I'm gonna need you and all of Licht Kreis to stay out of my way!

Orie: You're right. This battle was inevitable, if only because of this place… As an Executor of the Licht Kreis, it is my duty to take you on. For your sins, In-birth, I shall return you to nothingness!

Stage 9[]

Linne: After all I said about staying put, Hyde… You still had to come after me…

Hyde: Linne! You're okay! Man, I was worried about you. How could you just ditch me like that?! I ran into old man Wald, too, but he attacked me the minute he saw me. He must hate my guts or something…

Linne: Don't say that, Hyde. Despite how Wald treats you, he does care. The fact that he let you win tonight is proof. He's probably already back on his feet, taking down those foolish enough to wander into the Abyss.

Hyde: Linne! You're okay! Man, I was worried about you. How could you just ditch me like that?! Come to think of it… Where's old man Wald?! Don't tell me someone actually took him out…

Linne: Idiot, don't say those sorts of things. There's no way that beast would fall so easily. He went off on his own, saying something about a worthy foe. He seemed excited. I'd be interested in meeting the person strong enough to defeat him.

Hyde: Hahaha… I see. The old man's got spirit, as usual… Anyway, don't worry. I'm here now, so I'm gonna help you out. I may not be as strong as that geezer, but it'll be better than fighting alone.

Linne: No… Prepare yourself, Hyde. I thought I was clear that if we met here, it'd be as enemies. You want to go with me, but I can't take you. Neither of us will relent. The Hollow Night won't last forever, and only one of us can move on. We need to figure out who it'll be.

Hyde: You're not serious, are you Linne…? You know the only thing waiting for you at the end of all this is Paradox, right? Are you really gonna face her alone? I don't know what your deal is, but why can't we just fight her together?!

Linne: Whether or not I win against her is irrelevant. If I'm killed, I'll just be reborn. But if that woman gets her hands on your Insulator, all would be lost. I'm sorry Hyde, but I have to stop you.

Hyde: So in the end, only one of us will get our way, huh? Fine, Linne… Sorry, but it'll be me who moves on. It's time I put an end to all of this.

Linne: I didn't expect any other answer from you… Very well. That's a path you're free to choose. But I want you to make a promise… If you lose this battle, you won't come after me again.

Hyde: Yeah. This time, it's serious. I'll keep my promise. But in return, if I win, you'd better hold up your end of the bargain!

Final Stage[]

Hilda: Welcome, "Insulator," to the darkest depths of the Hollow Night, where the Altar of Light and Darkness awaits.

Hyde: Paradox. Yeah, I'm here, all right… It's time to settle things once and for all. I'll bring an end to this place for good!

Hilda: My, my… Boys grow up so fast nowadays! I know! Why don't you abandon the Princess of the Night Blade and join me instead? We can create a new world in the image of Amnesia and all In-births.

The Night Blade, Licht Kreis… I'm sick of hearing about the "Hollow Night" this, the "Order" that… The chosen ones, the "In-births"… "EXS"… The least they could do is allow me to live as I please.

So, why don't we change it all? Complete decimation so not even ashes will remain? Then the Hollow Night will be ours! Imagine, all of that power in your hands! So? Will we accomplish this magnificent feat together?

Hyde: I have no interest in getting myself into more trouble. I just wanna go back to my normal life. If you plan on getting in my way, I'll crush you and your delusions right here and now.

I think I finally get it. So many people have been corrupted by EXS and turned to evil… People like you. That's why Linne fought so hard to protect this night.

Linne showing up, suddenly being tasked with this sword… None of this was a coincidence. Her goal… Everything she wanted to achieve, I'll do in her stead. It's all I can do for her right now.

Hilda: …I see. What a shame. I suppose I'll give up trying to convince you, then. But in that case, I'm going to have to take the Insulator from you, as well as your Night Blade seal.

Then I will become a Re-birth, transcending the limits of the In-birth! Adelheid of the Licht Kreis, Kuon, Weaver of Eternity… I'll crush them, and Amnesia will rule the Night!

Now then, it's time for me to take the powers of your sword, and sacrifice them to my Vessel so that I can become one of the Re-birth! Insulator, come to me!

Epilogue[]

Hyde: What's the matter, Paradox? Looks like you've just about burned out. Don't tell me you're outta gas already?

Hilda: No, impossible… How could I be defeated by a little boy…? Was that the "Loop End," the true power of the Insulator? …I love it. I want it even more now. Give it to me!

Hyde: You don't when to quit, do you? You can barely even stand. Now that the Hollow Night is over, all that's left is to sever the connection to the Abyss. My role in all this is done. I have no reason left to fight you.

All Linne told me was, "Don't let them take it from you." Later, Paradox. It's time to put an end to this, and to you.

So this is the Abyss… The source of the Hollow Night. By cutting this, the Night will finally come to an end. Heh. Here's hoping I never see you again!

(The screen fades to white as Hyde destroys the Door to the Abyss)

Hilda:

Was this all a part of your little plan, Kuon the Eternal…? Farewell, Insulator boy. I'll be sure to return the favor when Night falls again. Next time, I'll be hunting YOU, okay?

-----[]

Linne: Glad you made it back, Hyde… Judging by the look on your face, I take it you defeated Paradox.

Hyde: Obviously! Otherwise I wouldn't be here! The Insulator's safe, too. I thought about killing off Paradox right then and there, but… I was barely able to move myself. She got away just before I got to her, haha. Well, all I had to do was destroy that door to the Abyss, right?

Linne: Heh… You're not much of an actor. It's obvious someone like you could never truly harm anyone. Well, not that it matters. The choice to let her live was yours to make.

Hyde: Hm? Did you just say something? Why do I get the feeling you were being insulting?

Linne: Don't worry about it. Real men don't sweat the small stuff.

We escaped Paradox this time, but she's a rare Vessel. I doubt that she'll give up so easily. We'll have to settle matters with her eventually. As long as she seeks the secrets of resurrection, and of the Night Blade, we'll have to continue dealing with her.

And Kuon the Eternal… Until I've discovered the truth behind his involvement, I cannot run away.

Hyde: So… I think I'll hold off on asking you what the hell's going on right now, but… You better promise to tell me someday, all right?

Linne: Ah… Right. I owe you that much. I promise to tell you someday. However, you still owe me from when I saved you from the Void. Remember, you promised to release me from Eternity. It's why I gave you that sword.

Hyde: Y-you idiot! Are you still going on about that stuff? You gotta tell me everything first, then! If I "end" you, how the hell am I supposed to know anything?!

Linne: Heh, heh… Good point. I'll be sure to keep that in mind. Don't worry, I'll tell you everything… One day.

Now, it's time to head home, Hyde. You, too, Kuu. It's almost morning… It'd be a disaster if someone found Wald knocked out.

Hyde: Y-Yeah, that'd be major news. Like, drunk Bigfoot or something…

UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II SYS:CELES[]

Prologue[]

Hyde: Can't believe it's already been three months since I fought Paradox. That went by in a flash. Time flies, I guess…

Tonight's main event is Linne's brother Kuon… He thinks he's gonna whip out the Immortalize and destroy the world? Not if me and Insulator have anything to say about it!

I'm not too crazy about handling this all by myself, but with Linne disappearing again and Old Man Wald joining up with Kuon to honor some promise or other, I don't have much of a choice.

Licht Kreis is loaded with girls, so Harada wouldn't put me up there. Plus all my classmates in the EFG don't need the headache… Not to mention that psycho girl could ambush me at any time…

Which leaves me with the Night Blade… and dealing with that loser Seth. Hard pass. That guy's so strong, it pisses me off. The worst part is we'd manage to win just fine, too.

Ahh, well. Once I'm in the Night, I'll be all alone either way. Gotta bite the bullet and get on with it. At least this time I'm not being left behind. I'm alone by my own free will!

This time, me and Insulator are gonna cut through all the stops! Nobody but me can pull it off, right? Right? …Right, Linne?

Welp, it's about time…
…to finally put an end to this Night-time story. It's been going on for too long anyway.

Stage 3[]

Waldstein: Keh heh heh, look who we have here! The strapping young blond lad. There's nothing for us to discuss, but I'll make you a deal: Drop that sword and walk away, and I shall spare your life…

Hyde: Old Man Wald… I knew I'd find you out here under the Night. I hate to break it to you, but you couldn't even pry this thing outta my cold, dead hands!

Waldstein: Hmm. Is that so? Then I'll just have to rip your entire arm off. Don't worry, I'll make sure you're good and dead before I do it! Gwaah ha ha ha ha!

Hyde: What's with you? Ran away from your master Linne and became a stray again, huh? I thought dogs like you were supposed to be loyal. Glad you're having a good time off your leash, I guess…

Waldstein: A good time, you say…? I can use my power without restraint, without a thought of the final Night or anything beyond… I can fight as I've always wanted to fight. Yes, I would call that a good time.

Hyde: You know what, old-timer? You've been around dozens of times longer than I have. A kid like me has no place tellin' you what to do with your life. Do whatever you want, as far as I care.

But I gotta say, annoying as your whole "warrior" shtick was at times, I'd like to think I had a certain level of respect for you. Now you're putting that "warrior" name to shame. You sure we can't talk?

Waldstein: Hmm… "Warrior," yes… That takes me back. There was once a time when I, too, was young and overflowing with such ideals as those…

Hyde: Uh, it was basically just the other day, though. Sheesh…

Waldstein: …There is not much time left for me. At this rate, nothing will change. I do what I do because you are not capable of saving us. So now, let me run wild as I please in my final moments…

Hyde: I see. Well, sorry to hear you feel that way. If that's really that musclebound brain of yours talking, then there's no use dragging things out. Let's get a move on, Mr. Hekatoncheir.

I've got a lotta beef with you!

Stage 6[]

Hilda: My, my, my… If it isn't Insulator Boy. Have you missed me?

Hyde: What the--? Paradox? Back for more, even after the beating Kuon gave you in the previous Night? You really are something else…

Hilda: Oh? I seem to recall you didn't fare much better. Anyway, I'm sure you agree that debts must be repaid, don't you? He'll have to pay for leaving without finishing the job. So rude.

Hyde: …When you're right, you're right. Stopping his Immortalize is one thing, but I've got my own beef with him, and I won't just shut up and take it.

Hilda: Now you're being honest. Was that so hard? By the way, you may think you're off the hook, but speaking of debts--you do realize I have plenty to repay you as well, right?

I underestimated you before, thinking you were just some brat who happened to trip over a cool sword. But now I know that Insulator of yours is a force to be reckoned with.

Hyde: You're not making it sound much better, saying it that way! I've got plenty of power on my own, too, dammit!

Hilda: Temper, temper. Yes, I'll admit you've got some power within you. That's exactly why I still owe you for what you did a few Nights back. Now, on this final Night, I'll crush you along with Aeon…

Hyde: Heh… Shoulda remembered who I was dealing with. Sure. Bring it on. But this is it, got it? Once we settle this, I don't need any more "next time" or "payback" or whatever.

Hilda: Huh? "Next time"? "Payback"? I haven't a clue what you're talking about.

Tch… You don't get to be cocky with me just because you've taken the lead. I'll make sure you know who the real champion is.

Final Stage[]

Hyde: Finally, last stop of the Night.
…Now c'mon, bro, where are you? Don't tell me you already got bored and went home!

Hey, Kuon! Come out, come out, wherever you aaaare! I know you're here somewhere! Now quit sneakin' around and show yourself, already!

(Kuon appears)

Kuon: …Sorry about that. I was waiting for the ideal timing. You must be Hyde Kido, the Wild Card. I'm your target, Kuon. Kuon the Aeon. Nice to meet you.

Hyde: "Nice to meet you"? Don't give me that bullshit. You think I forgot about what happened already? I'm not lookin' for small talk. Let's get this over with.

Kuon: Sure… I've had about enough of being chased around tonight anyway. You're after Linne's Power of Sealing. It's right here in my body. If you can take it from me… you win.

Hyde: Tch, so you already took the damn thing? …Not like I didn't think that might happen, but it still sucks. On the bright side, now I've got a chance to destroy you and the Power of Sealing at once.

Kuon: You really think you have that chance? I've already absorbed most of its power and accessed the Night's inexhaustible strength. Do you really think you can defeat the King of the Night?

Hyde: Nah, probably not.
…Then again, I've already fought plenty of opponents I shouldn't be able to beat, so…

Just don't let your guard down too much in front of an inferior opponent like me. You might embarrass yourself.

…Anyway. Sorry to keep you waitin', Linne. Looks like I might finally be able to deliver on that promise I made to you back when we first met!

Epilogue[]

Kuon: So I've lost… There's a great power hidden within you… Impressive…

You wield Insulator… The Indulgence Weapon known as the Eternity Killer… A ghost of the past doesn't stand a chance against the illustrious will of one who lives in the present…

Hyde: …Look, I'm sure you've got your reasons. But no way am I gonna sit back and watch you destroy the world. Linne's older brother or not, I've gotta take you out.

Kuon: You're right. Even if it cost me everything, even if it turned everyone against me, I wanted to cross over to the True Night. I had to. I won't say I didn't have a choice. And I won't beg for forgiveness.

Hyde: Yeah, I'd appreciate you keeping all that to yourself. It's easier on me if you're the bad guy who stays selfish to the end. Or else I might start waffling and not be able to finish you off.

That's enough long-winded conversation. Time's running out. Once my sword cuts through your Power of Sealing, all the shackles left on Linne will go along with it. Problem solved.

All right, here I come… Say goodbye before I smash your Vessel to pieces!

(Hyde cuts down Kuon with the Insulator, once and for all)

-----[]

Hyde: (A week's gone by since that final Night when the fate of the world hung in the balance… or at least it was a huuuge fight! But now life goes on as if nothing ever happened. My life included.)

(I wonder how everybody's doing. I know what's going on with Yuzu, Vatista, and everyone else who's close to me. But how about Uncle Wald? Or Seth? Or… Actually, I guess I don't really care that much.)

The real issue's with Linne, that little imp. She hasn't shown up at all since then. What the hell is she up to?

If she hasn't shown herself yet… I guess that means my power wasn't enough to save her….. Right?

Ugh! I need some closure here, dammit! There's gotta be some way I can find her… Somebody I can talk to about it, maybe…

(Sound of racing footsteps are heard as Hyde collides with someone)

Whoa! What's--? Sh-Shit, I'm gonna fall--!

(The screen turns white as Hyde falls on the pavement)

Oh man, that hurt… Uh, s-sorry about that. That was my bad. I just got lost in my head, y'know, and… Um… Are you okay?
