Hollow Night

The Hollow Night (虚ろの夜(うつろのよる)), usually shortened to Night, is a mysterious realm that manifests once a month. It is home to the Void.

"Those who get their souls devoured by the Dark Shadows, will end up wandering eternally in a mysterious world.", is the rumor that is being spread around the city of Kanzakai.

The Hollow Night is a phenomenon that has been around for many centuries. Organizations such as the Night Blade have been protecting civilians from getting involved with the Night and the Voids.

Hollow Night

The Hollow Night normally manifests once a month on the night of the full moon, covering a certain area. Those who happen to be within this area when the Night materializes are transported into the realm of the Voids. While most individuals caught in the Night end up as prey to the Voids, some people end up awakening as In-Births.

While the strongest Night of a given month only occurs on the full moon, smaller "minor" Nights occurring on the same month have manifested before. All Hollow Nights appear to last from the late evening until sunrise.

People outside of the Hollow Night's reach cannot see what happens within, and the people within the Night cannot view what happens in the real world. Additionally, all electrical devices are rendered useless within the Night.

While the Hollow Nights seen within the series take place in Japan, the phenomenon appears to take place in other countries as well, such as Germany.

Abyss

The Abyss (深淵(しんえん)) is a place appearing in the center of a Hollow Night. Hilda hints that beyond the Abyss a person can reach the status of a Re-Birth.

The Abyss is said to be an endless fountain of EXS. Due to the infinite amount of EXS it produces, it allows Voids to take a materialized form near it. However, the Abyss isn't surrounded by EXS only. A Void-like impure power lingers near the Abyss. This power can corrupt an In-Birth, turning them into a Void Fallen. Regardless, many In-Births still seek the Abyss to further strengthen themselves no matter if they are aware of the risk or not.

A Hollow Night can be forcibly ended by destroying its Abyss.

Gloom of Lament

Gloom of Lament (憂の滅明(うれいのめつめい)), also referred to as "Gloomy" (グルーミー) is a phenomena that appears to be a variation of the Hollow Night.

A "Gloomy" takes place irregularly and can appear without any warning sings. Chaos refers to them as Quickie or "QKY" as way to shorten the words from "Suddenly Appearing Hollow Night" (級にくる虚ろの夜). It is a Night with much thicker and stronger EXS taking the appearance of red fog. Being in close proximity to the Abyss during a Gloom of Lament event has been shown to quickly corrupt an individual, as seen with Roger turning into a Void Fallen, and Zohar losing her mind due to her trying to save him.
