Etherite (エーテライト), called Etherlite in the games made by TYPE-MOON, is a 5 kilometers long string consisting of an artificial nervous system with the shape of a nano-scale filament one micron thick that cannot be seen with the naked eye. The string is actually designed to attach to the opponent's skin, integrate with their central nervous system, and read their thoughts and memories. Furthermore, it allows its user to "merge with and copy memories and experiences", thus taking over someone else's life. The Etherite can also be used to control the target's body, but it cannot be removed except by the user. Once connected, the user can even send electricty through the filament to burn victim's brain, and if it's cut, it will burn the entire host's body.
In Melty Blood, however, the Etherlite is used more like a whip. Sion's 6C~4C command normals and her Etherlite Ground special strike at a range and can reel opponents in. Her Etherlite Air has her wrap herself around the Etherlite and jump upwards. In UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH, Eltnum retains these moves but adds Etherite Shift (her Force Function), which allows her to retreat while swinging her Etherite. Where the wire is connected to is also changed between games; Sion's Etherlite is connected through her bracelet, whereas Eltnum's Etherite seems to be connected through her glove.
