UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH[]

Prologue[]

Chaos: Now then… Gordeau has already been dispatched, and I have a mountain of work I need to clear out. The Night Blade and Licht Kreis… I'll take care of them, one at a time.

(Snap!)

What?! Why did this have to happen now? The brand-new laces on my shoes just snapped out of nowhere. Could it be an omen? Maybe something happened to Gordeau?

Tch… This could turn out to be an unfortunate day. As his friend, the least I could do is warn him.

(He tries to phone Gordeau, but no answer)

I shouldn't have expected him to answer his phone… Wait, does he even bring it around to begin with?

Damn it… What a bother. I can't send someone to see how he is, especially since he's no longer an official member of Amnesia. I need to keep our operations a priority...

Which means I'll have to deal with this personally and discreetly.

To think a high-ranking member of Amnesia like myself would have to enter the Hollow Night without any protection. It's like throwing meat to a school of piranha.

I was hoping to avoid ever having to fight in close quarters, or any physical combat, for that matter. But I suppose it might not be such a bad idea to use my powers from time to time.

Well, I'll just pray I don't run into anybody powerful. I'd prefer to make it back in one piece.

Stage 3[]

Carmine: *Smirk*

Chaos: I can't seem to tell whether it's a lack of class or a lack of intelligence. With so many violent In-births, this shouldn't be surprising, but… his utter lack of class almost got to me.

Carmine: What? The hell are you mumbling at me? Freaking creep.

Chaos: M-My apologies… I'm not in the best state of mind right now due to personal reasons. If memory serves, you must be Carmine Prime. When was the last time we saw each other?

Carmine: Tch, and who were you again? Oh yeah, Amnesia's supposed brain, Chaos, was it?

What's gotten into you tonight, anyway? No lackeys, no allies? You just decided to go out for a stroll or something?

You sure that was a good idea? Wouldn't want anything bad to happen to that pretty little face of yours, now would we? HAHAHAHAHA!

Chaos: I'm honored that you remembered me. I'm relieved to know that your brain has the capacity to recognize and remember names and faces. Or, are you simply brighter than you let on?

For some reason, Hilda has taken an interest in you. Thinks you have talent… But, I disagree with her. Not sure what she sees in you… Though she loves people capable of running amok.

Carmine: Running amok…? Heh, if it's bad behavior we're talking about, I think you guys have already done plenty of that.

You've made far bigger messes than I ever will… Maybe that's what I don't like about you guys.

You put a nutcase like her on a pedestal, yet you consider guys like me garbage…

Chaos: Well, we are essentially a band of villains… There is no denying that. While most of the members enjoy wreaking havoc, I like to think I'm the brains of the operation. You know, what you obviously lack.

Carmine: You goddamn brainiac… I don't know what you're going on about, but you're getting on my nerves.

I tell ya'… I wonder how much good that brain of yours will do right now.

Chaos: Yes… Well, perhaps I should teach you a lesson as well. That mere power alone can't overcome logic. By the way, you should really learn how to speak properly…

Carmine: Shut the hell up! Like I'd care! Why don't you tell me more after I shove your face into the ground?!

Chaos: Unbelievable… I seem to have a knack of getting into trouble, even when I try not to. What a night to do all this manual labor…

Stage 6[]

Waldstein: *Grin*

Chaos: Unbelievable… Another one without even the faintest glimmer of intelligence. Are you human? Do you speak English?

Waldstein: What are you talking about, child? This flesh is human, and I speak the language of the land. You should learn how to properly address your elders, you little sprout. Or should I remove you from the ground and toss you into the heavens?

Chaos: Wait, I'm normally not one to judge by appearances, and I do pay proper respects to my elders, but you have to admit that my initial reaction was justified, considering the situation.

Waldstein: Stop with your prattling. If you have something to say, just spit it out already. In the end, a battle is a test of strength. Isn't that why you've come into this "Night?"

Chaos: A test of strength? I'll need to correct you on that idea, old man. Battles have always been a test of wits and strategy since ancient times. A true testament of what battles are about.

Although if I were to attempt to explain it to someone like you, it will likely fall on deaf ears. I shall win this confrontation, and prove that strategy triumphs over all. Consider it a much-needed lesson.

Waldstein: Hm? I'm not sure exactly what you were trying to say, but one thing did catch my attention. You wish to defeat me, do you not?

Chaos: Indeed… Defeating a hulking monster like you with strategy will unequivocally prove my point.

Strength will not overcome a greater power, but logic and reason will. The most effective actions at the right moments will conquer every time. I shall defeat you with honor and respect.

Stage 9[]

Yuzuriha: *Smile*

Chaos: Not another imbe-- Wait, this one may simply be free-spirited… Either it's a coincidence, or the overall In-birth intelligence index has taken a steep nosedive…

Yuzuriha: Huh? What's with all the muttering, four-eyes? First that belly flasher, and now you… What a weird night it's been…

Chaos: What? Does that mean… You ran into Gordeau? Tell me a bit more. Where and when did you see him? Was he hurt? He's not hurt, is he?

Yuzuriha: Wh-What the--? You're friends with that belly-flashing perv? You seem way too into him to be healthy. It's creepy…

Chaos: Argh! Just tell me where I can find him! Which way did he go?

Yuzuriha: I have no freaking clue, okay? We just bumped into each other, and by the time I thought of it, he'd already taken off. But you know, everyone with powers goes to the same place under the Night, right?

Chaos: I see… From what you're saying, it's safe to assume he's safe. Very well. Your work here is done. You're free to leave.

Yuzuriha: Now hold it right there! I don't know who you are, but if you're friends with that perv, that means you belong to that Amn…esty group, right?

There's no way I can let baddies like you run around causing trouble. I let that perv run away, but I'm not gonna let you off that easily. Got it?

Chaos: Understood… I'm in a rush, and I don't have time to lecture you, so how about we decide this in battle. Agreed?

And as thanks for the information about Gordeau, I shall end this quickly.

Final Stage[]

Chaos: Hey, Gordeau! Are you here?! Are you okay?

Hilda: What took you so long? We're both leaders within the same organization, but it's been so long we last spoke. I was getting worried, since you never leave that room of yours. Did you read any of my notes? The ones asking you to come visit?

Chaos: Please, do not treat me like I'm some kind of shut-in. So, is Gordeau here? He'd better be safe…

Hilda: Gordeau is right there… Lying at your feet, actually. It's like he tripped on something and fell, and he just simply won't wake up. How annoying is that?!

Chaos: I had a bad feeling about tonight. At least the worst hasn't happened. (If he wasn't waking up, you should have taken him to a hospital, foolish woman!)

Hilda: So, Chaos… You were worried sick about Gordeau, which brought you here… Does that mean you were going to try and stop me? Don't tell my own tactician was about to betray me?

Chaos: Stop it. You know there's no way I would stand a chance against you. Excuse me, but I'm about Gordeau, so I'll be taking him with me.

Hilda: No need to lie to me! I know what people really call you. The Uninvited Guest, Bloody Chaos. Gordeau told me all about that. He said even he wasn't a match for your wanton violence.

Chaos: (…What a way to lie, Gordeau. He's beaten me before…)

Hilda: The truth is, I've always wanted to have a go at you. So, how about we make a deal? If you beat me, you can have Gordeau. That's how things work on these Nights, anyway. What say you?

Chaos: You must really want to see me use my powers, don't you? Not the wisest decision on your part, but if it'll make you feel better, I suppose it's worth the hassle.

But I want you to promise me a few things. First, if I win, you won't ask for a rematch or hold a grudge against me. Second, you'll let me take Gordeau back without any trouble. Third, regardless of the outcome, you will remain the head of Amnesia. None of these points are open to negotiation.

Hilda: Yes, yes. I understand already. My goodness. But I have to say, you seem to assume I'll lose this battle… That certainty of yours may certainly be premature.

Epilogue[]

Hilda: It can't be… My powers are greater than yours, and yet…

Chaos: The answer is quite simple, really. Well-reasoned actions will always prevail. No matter how strong you are, you're fighting blindfolded if you can't make the right decisions.

Hilda: What the--? A-Are you suggesting I'm stupid or something?

Chaos: No comment. I don't want to injure your pride any more than I already have. Now, as promised, Gordeau is coming with me. Despite it being the Hollow Night, you really should have taken him to a hospital.

-----[]

Chaos: Gordeau, wake up… How long are planning on sleeping?

Gordeau: Hm… Chaos…? What are you doing here? Last thing I remember is fighting Hilda, and then… I see… Hahaha, sorry for causing you trouble again.

Chaos: How very unlike you. Tripping was a critical mistake. The Hollow Night isn't exactly the place for a comedic routine.

Gordeau: Forget about that. You actually beat Paradox? I should've expected as much from the Bloody Chaos.

Chaos: Please, do not refer to me by that embarrassing name. I used it once, and only for a single operation years ago. And why did you lie to Hilda, as if you've never beaten me before?

Gordeau: I know, I know, sorry about that… So, what'd you think after fighting her?

Chaos: Well, we might belong to the same organization, but I don't see her that often. Not sure what's happened to her recently, but her powers have grown considerably, though it felt like she was being controlled by those powers, and not the other way around. That's probably why I won.

If she stays on her current path, history will repeat itself and she'll likely become a Void. At least we were able to not only pierce her Vessel, but prevent the Abyss from opening.

Despite not having much of a plan when I set out, I think everything turned out okay in the end. Heh… This was supposed to be your responsibility, you know?

Gordeau: Yeah, yeah… What's worse is, I've got nothing to say to that.

Chaos: It's probably safe to assume that the Weaver of Eternity is responsible for her spike in power. Regardless, now isn't the time to worry about her. Our target is the Crimson Knight of Licht Kreis.

Now then, that's enough discussion for now. Why don't you go take a shower and get changed or something… And tomorrow, I really think you should go to the hospital, just in case.

(They disperse)

Have my days of simply watching from the sidelines finally come to an end? I'm sick of all this physical labor and pain, but…

Chaos: The Weaver and Licht Kreis… Entities that wield massive amounts of power… Now is the time for me to ensnare you. I can't wait to see how this unfolds, so I can laugh at their tears as they fall…

UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II SYS:CELES[]

Prologue[]

Chaos: Goodness. It seems like Aeon is on the move as expected. Whatever will I do? If I don't stop him, it'll be a disaster… to put it mildly. More accurately, it'll be the end of the world.

He's trying to destroy the wall separating this world from the Night. If he does, an unstoppable tidal wave of Voids and EXS will cover the globe. The world would go beyond the Hollow Night, into True Night…

To be honest, I'd actually be excited to see such a once-in-a-lifetime event happen up close. It's not every day you get to watch the world end. Ha ha ha…

…But then again, once the show's over, that's it. There's no point in watching if I end up dead on the spot. Even if I manage to survive, I wouldn't have a world to live in. Sorry, Kuon; I reject your proposal.

Of course, the problem lies in how to "reject" such a powerful being. I can't rely too much on Hilda and Gordeau. I'd better go myself. Curveballs are more my speed than the straight approach, either way.

Kuon the Aeon… Even though the end times are nigh, it really is a pity… As someone who's lived for ages, you had so much insight and substance to offer. I wish there were a way to keep our relationship.

…Ah, well. The longer I sit here thinking to myself, the closer we come to game over. Time is of the essence, right, Chaos Code? I'm afraid this will be our last turn under the spotlight, partner.

This could be your last chance to taste quality prey. You should be sure to savor every bite down to the bone.

Stage 3[]

Tsurugi: (Grin)

Chaos: Hey now… Do we really have to go through this again? I'd really rather be done with this anatomical anomaly…

Tsurugi: Hmm? What is it, big guy? You got a headache or something? You're gonna get wrinkles furrowing your brow like that.

Chaos: It's… nothing. Merely personal matters. You must be Tsurugi from the EFG, right?

Tsurugi: Sure am. But huh… I don't think we've met before. Am I famous now or something? Shucks, I'll have to practice signing my autograph! Ha ha ha!

Should I go cursive or stick with print? What do you think, Bloody Chaos of Amnesia?

Chaos: Aha. Well played. I'm glad you show some signs of intelligence. We're short on time, so I'll send a fastball right over the plate: How is the EFG planning to handle this Night?

Tsurugi: How…? Keep pressing forward until we punch this Kuon guy in the face, obviously. What other way is there? If you've got a problem with that, there's a punch with your name on it, too.

Chaos: I see… I didn't think the EFG would be so… direct. Though I suppose that plan may be one of your own design…

Tsurugi: Look, think about it all you want--at the end of the day, it is what it is: you gotta beat him up and stop him. Why don't you tell me what Amnesia's plans are, if they're so much better?

Chaos: It's simple. First of all, we beat him up and stop him. …That really is the only way. It seems I've spent too much time around people whose fists move faster than their brains and it's rubbed off on me…

Tsurugi: Nice! I was worried that you were gonna ask me to cooperate with you, but I can get behind what you said. Not everyone can understand words, but fists are the universal language! Simple is best, am I right?

Chaos: Well… I can't quite agree that this is the "best" method… But either way, here in the final Night, I feel like my body still isn't quite sharp enough yet…

So I'd call this a warmup duel… if I weren't fighting a man on your level, of course. Don't worry--I'll fight you just like I'd fight Aeon himself.

Stage 6[]

Londrekia: (Smile)

Chaos: At this point, anybody could show up and I'd take it in stride. All sorts of crude characters roam around in the Night. All I can do is be ready for them.

Speaking of… What's this? This one doesn't seem particularly crude. In fact, he looks somewhat intelligent…

Londrekia: …What? Wh-What's wrong? Is there something on my face?

Chaos: This is unexpected. His eyes shine with earnestness… No foul language, no sudden assaults… He appears to understand me… Your outfit tells me you're with Licht Kreis. Are you not?

Londrekia: Well, your capacity for judgment is a bit problematic, but that conversation might get complicated, so I'll let it slide for now. Indeed, I am affiliated with Licht Kreis. Londrekia, at your service.

Chaos: Aha… So you're the male Executor that I've heard about. I suppose that's part of what you mean by "complicated." You can skip the explanation. I was merely making my own predictions.

Londrekia: I thank you for your courtesy. It's not a subject I'm terribly proud to discuss with outsiders. In fact, I find it quite embarrassing, ha ha ha…

Chaos: Moving on… I can't hold my tongue in front of a Licht Kreis member. I'll reveal my identity as well. I am called Chaos--a member of Amnesia. Perhaps you've heard of us; I understand we have quite a reputation.

Londrekia: I had the feeling that might be the case. I wasn't sure how to get you to confess, so I appreciate the self-introduction. And just to confirm, that book that you're holding is…?

Chaos: As I'm sure you've guessed, I got it from your organization. But to be clear, I negotiated with the Executor present and obtained it fairly, understand? I will admit to minor trespassing, though.

Londrekia: I see. Again, I appreciate your candor. Personally, I don't have much interest in pressing you further on how you got the Chaos Code. But do understand--as a member of Licht Kreis, I must try to take it back.

Plus, I'd like to find out whether or not the rumors about you and Aeon are true. Depending on the situation, you could very well be considered an accomplice to this whole disaster…

Chaos: Fair enough. If I were in your position, I'd do exactly the same. I've no choice, then. At least it'll be nice to do battle with someone capable of intelligent conversation. If you challenge, I accept.

My skills with this book have improved significantly. I no longer run around witlessly with it any more. And I want you in Licht Kreis to see my progress for yourselves.

Final Stage[]

Chaos: Phew… Finally, here I am at my final destination: the Abyss. It's been a long way coming. I don't see Hilda or Gordeau anywhere… I suppose I'll have to do this myself.

Honestly, I don't know how far my powers will take me, but I should have a good chance as long as I stay away from fighting "properly" or "fair and square." I'll fight as dirty and tenaciously as it takes.

Get ready, Kuon. I'm coming in.

(Kuon appears)

Kuon: Who are you…?

Chaos: Hello, Kuon. Long time no see. You've grown a lot since the last time I saw you. I almost didn't recognize you. So this is the real you?

Kuon: Oh, it's you… Right. It has been a while. You took good care of me back when I had the body of a toddler.

You supported me when my EXS hadn't fully returned… You gathered information and got the Wielders ready… Without your knowledge and support, I wouldn't be here right now…

Chaos: Your appreciation makes it all worth the effort. Still, you've become a malignant force that plans to destroy the world. Any reminder that I've helped you is frankly shameful to me.

The path into the Night can lead to the uncovering of many mysteries… The pursuit of knowledge is admirable, but the problem is the cost. If you manage to get that door open, the whole world pays the price.

Kuon: I see… Therein lies the difference in our opinions. Sadly, I can't yield to you. The paths we walk are in parallel, never to cross each other. I will go into the Night and stop Higan from drawing breath.

Chaos: That figures… I knew your resolve would be rock solid. You've been working at it for this whole time, after all. Fine, then. I didn't think I could talk you out of it anyway.

It's high time you woke up… Or rather, time you went back to the original Kuon. I can't have you swallowing up the whole world. There are too many books I still haven't read yet.

It was nice knowing you. Consider this an act of mercy from a former accomplice. I'll gladly write the final chapter in the story of Eternity.

Don't worry. My victory comes with a special bonus I'd like to call "finding a better way to solve all of this together."

Epilogue[]

Kuon: I never thought your measly powers… could block my way into the Night…

Chaos: Sorry to disappoint you. Maybe it was because of my weak powers that a miracle occurred… Though I predict your chances of losing were fairly high, even against someone other than myself.

Your heart is filled with vengeful darkness. I wonder who kept you distracted this whole time. It's easy to fight someone when they're preoccupied with something else--but I'm sure you know that.

Kuon: You have a point. That is a weakness indeed. I accept my defeat.

My body has begun to break down, and I will soon cease to exist. I'm sorry for all the trouble I've caused you… in the short time I've known you… This is goodbye.

Chaos: Wait, before the end, there's something I have to ask you--or rather your Vessel. To tell you the truth, it's the real reason I came here.

To finally close the book on the long story of the Night, I'm ready to play my last trump card… and make a forbidden use of my power.

If I can summon a Void into form out of this book, doesn't it stand to reason that I should be able to do the opposite as well? To read the power of the Void as if it were information?

I've tried it before and found that it is possible. But it consumed EXS so rapidly I thought my self might flow away with it, and then the only consciousness I could read was hunger. It's not to be taken lightly.

Part of me hesitates to read the consciousness of one on the brink of disappearing. But I believe that this is a way to settle the issues of the Hollow Night, EXS, In-Births, you, and everything in between.

Here goes nothing… From your flesh, formed from the Void--no, from the Power of Sealing fused with the Vessel in your body--I'll read it all… Your mind, your words, your information!

And I'll uncover the true nature of the Night!

(In a flash, Kuon disappears and Chaos doubles over in pain as the screen turns white)

-----[]

Chaos:

I… I seem to be alive… I think I'm safe for now, but after such a brash move, that's the best I can hope for. Looks like I paid an appropriate price for what I did.

I was able to get a glance into Kuon's memories, or rather the records of the Power of Sealing. They were fragmented, but still intriguing… They'll be important clues to unraveling the Night's secrets.

So I paid the price for them with my body… If that's what it costs to honor my oath and satisfy my curiosity, then I suppose it's well worth it.

(The EXS inside me dissipated in an instant--but more flowed in from outside to replace it. It's a wonder that my mind and body weren't possessed by another "me.")

Now, with that settled… the crisis is behind us. But my duty to uncover the Night and EXS remains before me, as ever.

You're still with me, right, Azhi Dahaka? We're going home.

Ed015cha

Chaos' UNI2 Ending CG.

Chaos: I know you're no longer in the book. You're inside me. You comprise about half of me now, I suppose. I've always considered us one and the same, so I don't mind. If anything, I'm delighted that you're with me.

Let's keep going together. We've eliminated the wrath of the Eternal One and prevented the destruction of the world. All that's left now is to unravel the mystery of the Hollow Night system itself.

It's a major project that's been left solely in my hands. I promise that I'll see it through. But don't worry, I can already see the light at the exit. We'll get there in no time…
