"All right then... The jewel called the Void Red, have you seen, or heard of it...?"

Azel (アゼル) is a young boy who wanders the Hollow Night in search of a rare jewel.

Appearance

Azel has yellow eyes and short beige hair. He wears a loose white shirt, green overalls and a huge cap.

Azel's androgynous appearance has caused a few misunderstandings about his gender within the story, but no one has outright questioned him about his identity.

Personality

Azel is a timid boy who isn't physically active, preferring to evade trouble. He loves medieval stories about knights, and aspires to write such stories one day.

In Japanese, Azel speaks using the humble and boyish pronoun "Boku" (僕).

Story

Episode: "You're really pissing me off" (血が騒ぎやがるんだよ！)
Azel wanders under the Night and stops Carmine in order to gather information. Azel takes quite a liking to Carmine and follows him around several times, much to the latter's chagrin. Azel often refers to Carmine as the "Red Person" (赤の人), claiming that his memories are in a rather chaotic state and he cannot recall recent events very well. Carmine himself sees Azel as a pain, but can't bring himself to defeat Azel in battle.

At the end of the final chapter, Azel mentions to be looking for The Ruby of Nothingness, the "Void Red" (虚無なる紅玉(ヴォイド・レッド)). Azel's important friend is apparently looking for it and is trying to help. Azel refers to this person as the Holy Knight, Sigurd (聖騎士(シグルド)).

Abilities

Azel can create an illusionary being named Sigurd using EXS similar to how Orie summons her being, Thanatos . In concept art, Azel's ability is referred to as "Third Dimension, [Stereography]" (立体化(ステレオグラフィ)).

Azel can vanish from a place instantaneously in a ghost-like fashion. Gordeau also notes that Azel's body is somehow very special.

Trivia

• Azel appears to be based on the scrapped character "Mercedes" (メルセデス). Visually they are very similar, but Azel's background and setting were drastically changed.
  • Another piece of concept art shows a similar character named "Giselle" (ジゼル), who also appears to have served as the base for Azel.
• Azel makes a cameo appearance in BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle as an unlockable player card icon alongside Lex and Kuon.
• Azel shares his voice actor, Akari Kitou with Komatsu.
• Azel as a name appears to be a corruption of the name "Azazel", who was a fallen angel and a devil in various mythologies.
