Chapter 1[]

Bg04 01

Orie: There, in the distance… Is that the town?

Outside the window of the train…

Under the white, hazy sky, a large and misty town appeared.

Lex: No, it's a little further away. It'll take a while to get there, so I'll tell you the mission details after we arrive.

We can't be sure that no one else is listening in… she added in a whisper.

Orie: Right. Thank you, Lex.

Lex: Until then, why don't we chat? We haven't talked at all since we met up at the airport.

Lex pulled out snacks and drinks from her bag, and casually fiddled around with her computer.

Lex: Even though I said we wouldn't know who'd be listening in, our car's fairly empty. I think we'll be all right so long as we keep an eye out.

Orie: Oh, Lex…

The landing of the plane. Reuniting with Lex. Glimpses of memories came to mind as I sank back in my seat.

We had been in a bit of a rush to make the train earlier, but we were otherwise off to a good start.

Orie: (My legs are still a bit sore…)

The shape of the quiet city stretched across the scenic landscape.

More and more houses were gradually beginning to appear along the quaint countryside.

This train would bring us to our destination, but it seemed it would take some time to get there.

The moment I saw Lex at the airport, it was clear she had been up all night, which she later admitted was because she was working on important documents.

Orie: (She still thinks she works better at night. She hasn't changed a bit. She didn't have to come out all this way if she was so sleepy…)

Though, that's what makes her so thoughtful.

Even now, she's fixated on her computer, saying she needs just another minute to finish up her work. Our conversations would get cut short again and again because of this. Really, this girl…

Orie: I wonder if Kaguya's already there…

Lex: Yeah, she's fine. She's got it more together than you.

Orie: What? I have it together too, you know?

Kaguya was our age as well. A childhood acquaintance, friend, comrade, and a powerful ally.

All we knew was that she had a mission elsewhere, and that she would meet up with us again after it was completed. As soon as we disembarked from the plane, she was gone.

Orie: She could have waited to leave after seeing you, don't you think? It's been so long.

Lex: Hahaha. That's just like her, though. It's fine. Whether we want her to or not, she'll find us.

Orie: I suppose that's true…

I turned my phone back on to see if I received any sort of message from Kaguya, but there was no service.

Right. I would have to make some adjustments if I wanted to call or message anyone.

I wasn't even able to tell her that I had met up with Lex.

Orie: (Lex said she'd do something about the phone situation later, so I guess I can contact her after that. Plus, I'm sure she's busy as well. Sorry, Kaguya.)

I tucked the now useless phone into my bag.

Lex continued to sleepily type away on her beloved computer, working again as usual.

Orie: (I wonder if we'll be all right on this mission…)

Each new mission we've undertaken has been in a new land. I could never get used to it. But the unease I felt this time around was much greater than usual…

Orie: *Sigh*… Gathering information as a student… Just what is headquarters asking me to do…?

A part of me was adamant about fulfilling the mission objective, but I still felt hesitant, unable to see why the details would be so different from anything we had done previously.

Lex: Don't worry yourself over it. The higher-ups are trusting you with missions like these because they have high expectations of Orie Valadier, Fifth Executor of Licht Kreis.

Orie: Ugh, you're just saying that…

My name is Orie Valadier. I am an Executor of the Licht Kries, the organization whose mission is to control and restrict the use of EXS.

I've assumed the alias of "Orie Harada" for this mission, which is actually closer to my real name. I had been overseas for so long, I wasn't used to saying it myself.

After I lost my parents in an accident when I was young, the Licht Kreis took me in and raised me.

I've spent my life trying to repay them for their kindness.

They treated me as family after I had lost my own. Adelheid was a caring and loving guardian, though strict at times. Many others came from similar circumstances as I had, and chose the same path.

I will repay this debt, even if it means my life. Not out of some blind faith, but from pure gratitude.

Without the Licht Kreis, I would likely not be a part of this world today.

No, no… Stop thinking of depressing things. I have to focus. I can't waste this long train ride doing nothing.

I opened my bag to take out the dossier for this mission.

Orie: Um, let's see… "Confidential Infiltration"… This is all I need to read, right…?

Lex: Right. Well, there are the usual obvious points in there, so you'll be okay, even if you don't read it all the way through. Just don't forget, you're a transfer student from a wealthy, all-girls' school.

Orie: Yeah, got it… But I'm not really good at acting high-class…

Lex: Haha, so long as you keep your cool, things'll work out, no problem.

Eyes around me will be expecting grace. It would be tough to meet their expectations.

Orie: (When people think of the Licht Kreis, they usually assume we're affluent, as if our members really do go to an elite academy.)

(But the Licht Kreis isn't like that, myself included. This elegant act I need to put on is making me nervous.)

Wait, there is that girl Erika, who actually does hail from a noble bloodline… Though from what I've heard, she needs to put on a different sort of act at times.

Kaguya is actually from a family of renown as well, but she's better at acting the part and tricking people.

Then there's Mika, another person without any relatives. And Lex… Actually, I've never asked her about her past before…

There are many things about her that are strange, but her frail and demure appearance seems not to invite much attention.

More than anything, she has sharp intuition and grasps concepts easily. Though, she is a bit strange…

Lex: Hm? What's wrong? Why are you looking at me like that? Are you remembering what it was like when we reunited at the airport?

Orie: That's not it at all. Lex…

Lex: What is it…?

Still, perhaps it would be rude of me to ask about her history out of nowhere. I'm sure there are things in her past that she doesn't want to talk about, either.

Orie: …No, it's nothing. I just wanted to practice being elegant for the mission.

Lex: Oh, nice. That was a really gentle expression on your face just now. This school's fairly normal compared to the others you've seen on past missions. Just try and have some fun.

Everyone will see you as a rich exchange student from a super prestigious school, so try and act accordingly.

Orie: Why did they have to make the school so prestigious… Gosh…

Even the school we went to through the Licht Kreis was a normal school, but for some reason, it was considered historically famous by others.

Orie: (The building itself and all the desks were worn down. The facilities were old, too. It really was a far cry from a prestigious girls' school. Well, maybe the outside was decorated nicely…)

I suppose the Licht Kreis's efforts to present a refined image were well worth it. It's no wonder that people would think of us in that way.

Especially with being known all internationally as a philanthropic organization. You could even say that there isn't anyone in the world who hasn't heard of that name.

Orie: (It's unfortunate that we're not as recognized in this land…)

The Licht Kreis operates out of several branches in cities across the globe, providing help to people in suffering.

We're praised as ambassadors of justice and the light, and if I'm being honest, I think the Licht Kreis uses that to its advantage as a front, moving under the pretense of a charitable organization.

Orie: Well, I'll do my best as someone appointed to the job… But there sure is a lot of pressure to keep Licht Kreis's image pristine.

Lex: That's true. Well, our job is still to give hope to others. If you're in a bind and need inspiration, just think of shining a holy light on those who need saving.

She laughed wryly, her eyes still on her computer screen.

Orie: An organization of justice that saves those in need… Yeah, you're right…

Still, it was just a facade aimed at the rest of the world.

The Licht Kreis's actual mission was to control and restrain the Voids that appeared in the Hollow Night and punish those who abused the power of EXS. An organization comprised solely of women.

Those who gained the power of EXS were called In-births.

People, myself included, gained superhuman powers of EXS…

There wasn't much difference in the number of male and female power-wielders. That being said, the Licht Kreis was comprised of females.

It could be just a theory, but EXS was seen to be stronger in women who were more emotionally sensitive, That could be one of the reasons.

Other than that, I've also heard rumors going around that the leader of the group, Adelheid, wasn't good with men, making it a completely female space.

I did try and confirm this from within the organization, And it seemed it wasn't too far from the truth.

Orie: (It's a bit difficult to ask about this. The topic may run deeper than I can imagine. To think everyone says things are so easy here since we're all girls!)

Hey, Lex? Things are more open between us since we're girls, right?

Lex: Hm? Well, I'd still be fine if you were a guy, Orie… Why do you ask? Are you thinking about the people in Licht Kreis?

Orie: Yeah, I suppose so. Behind the organization of justice is a group made up of girls who go on monster hunts… I was just thinking about what not to talk about at the school.

Lex: Yeah, there's no need to talk about the monster-hunting part. Just act like a super elegant woman from a prestigious school. Adding onto that will just create holes in our story.

"Super elegant"…Oh, geez…

Lex: Pushing the fact that you've been going to an all-girls' school would be a good cover. It's not a lie, after all. It supports how you've never interacted with guys before.

Orie: W-What? I've interacted with them a bit… Kind of.

Well, that aside…

The Licht Kreis's job was to defeat the Voids, these utterly mysterious demons who eat human souls, and appear on the Hollow Night…

And to guide chaotic beings who abuse EXS in the right direction.

That was the true mission of the Licht Kreis.

Orie: I wonder how the Licht Kreis got to be such a large organization… Is Adelheid just really good at business…?

Perhaps a bit tired from her work, Lex stretched while she spoke.

Lex: I'm not sure about that. One thing I can say is that there was definitely a significant component of luck involved. We were created ages ago, as an organization that started to defeat Voids, right?

Orie: Yeah.

Lex: We hunt Voids and fight against In-births. With all of that fighting, saying we did charity work was the only thing we could do.

And, from defeating the monsters of the night naturally came symbolism and words like light and justice. …to ensure nothing about the night would be exposed to the public.

Then we gain the image of the charitable organization of light. We gained sympathy from the people, and grew from there. So, we just needed to keep in line with that image.

I know I make it sound simple, but of course it's not something anyone can do. It wouldn't go well if we were to try it again. That's why I say it happened because of luck.

Orie: I suppose this is Adelheid's fate as well.

Lex: Yeah, though it might be from luck, it's good that we're growing. Defeating the Voids and In-births won't make a living for us. We have to do something else in order to preserve the organization.

It seems as though here in Japan, there was a clan famous for hunting Voids, but because of their limited resources, they may be on the verge of closing down…

Orie: I see… so there is an organization like that…

Lex: I'm sure there are others around the world, throughout history. You can't live off of just ideals. And you can't create ideals without making a living. It's a cruel reality…

All I could do was muster a dry laugh.

Orie: …Yeah. We wouldn't be able to protect people from the fangs of the Voids then, would we? It's important to secure a way to live… Right.

Lex: Of course it is. The knowledge and power of EXS. I'm sure using that is a way to stay alive. However, Adelheid made the decision for herself not to do so.

Orie: I…wouldn't want a future like that.

If the Licht Kreis was an organization that caused chaos with EXS, then we may have been the ones being defeated by doers of justice.

Lex: Though the Licht Kreis was well known, no one's ever heard of us doing anything so dark. We should be proud of that.

Orie: Though, it may just be that such talk just doesn't come to people like us on the front lines…

Lex: That's possible. We are holders of this special, magic power, EXS. It wouldn't be strange that there would be some deals or secrets within the top ranks.

Orie: Right…

Lex: Still, it would still be to preserve the organization. So long as it doesn't go against the progress of humankind, it would have to be permitted.

If it's small enough to not be heard by people at our level, I'm sure it'd be fine to consider it as permissible. If it were something atrocious, I'm sure we'd have heard about it…

Orie: Right…

If the Licht Kreis abused and misused EXS. If it had been complicit in hurting someone.

We Executors would go to defeat the Licht Kreis itself. I would have no hesitation in doing that.

Orie: (Though, I'm hoping that would never be the case.)

The complete extermination of evil In-births.

Most of the missions entrusted to us Executors are combative duties, based mostly around the elimination of Voids.

But this time, the mission is to infiltrate and investigate.

We were told that there could be fighting depending on the circumstance, but the objective was to live as a normal student and gather information.

The majority of missions that we've undertaken before with clear goals like, battle these people and retrieve something, were much clearer and easier, it seemed.

Orie: *Sigh*… Infiltrating a school, huh? I wonder if we'll be okay…

"Crawling across the Sahara Desert would be easier…" An expression people use how difficult it is to fit into a new school.

I hope it isn't that bad here…

Mmrn… Just thinking about what's happened until now is bringing me down, though I'm more uneasy because of the unusual circumstances…

Lex: We'll be fine. …Though, you are a bit clumsy at times, So I can't say I'm not 0% worried, though.

Orie: Don't say such mean things so casually, Lex.

Lex: You're Orie, victor of battle. You'll be fine this time, too. What's wrong? You seem so uneasy this time around.

Part of it is having this transit time to fuss over things. I can't get my thoughts together. I'm just trying to get Lex to sympathize with me at this point.

Orie: Aagh! No, no, no! I'll be fine if I just act normal! Augh, I'm just thinking of all these unnecessary things.

Illness comes from your state of mind. They say if you keep thinking negatively, your emotions and thoughts will be pulled in that direction too, and it will eventually become reality.

I glance outside, and find the setting sun to be relaxing.

My hand naturally moves to the window, and opens it.

Orie: …Wow…the wind feels so nice.

Lex: …O-Orie. Don't open it too much, my documents will fly all over the place.

I'm sorry Lex… You're still working.

Now that I think about it, a lot of time has passed since we got on this train. Traveling on an unfamiliar train. My hips and bottom hurt a bit, perhaps from sitting for so long.

Orie: …Mmnng… Ahh… Phew… Ah, I feel refreshed after that stretch.

Lex: …You sound like an old woman.

Orie: Don't say that! I was just thinking the same thing…

The train rattled and swayed in a steady rhythm. It was pleasant.

The scenery outside the window. Everywhere I look, the blue sky stretches across, and the sunlight pours down gently to us. The large trees show a tint of red, giving everything the feeling of fall.

Orie: *Sigh* I'd sure like to stay like this and just take a vacation…

I lean against the wall, resting my head on my hand.

Lex: You've traveled plenty across the world, though, Orie.

Orie: You can't call that traveling. What I mean is going sightseeing, chatting in new places, making new memories.

I've been thrown into planes in hasty rushes, only to return shortly afterward. You couldn't consider that traveling at all.

Well, I am aware that that would be a luxury. Focus on the mission, first… I know you need to have a bit of fun on the job, but I can't get sloppy.

Orie: On a mission in Japan, huh…

I've come to this place that's so important to me. I have to give it my all, both in terms of having fun, and also the mission.

Orie: (Being able to be back here on a mission. Maybe, ultimately, I'm really happy about it…)

I felt the excitement running through me as if a child on a field trip.

Orie: (An unfamiliar place. I'm a bit uneasy at the unfamiliar scenery, but I do feel a bit of nostalgia, too…)

Once this mission seems handled, I'll take just a bit of time and look around the country.

That idea grew within me, as I looked at the calming scenery out the window.

Orie: Well, I'm glad there's such nice weather today. So many things would have gone to waste if it were raining on the first day.

I heard a sharp retort of, "I actually wish it were a bit cloudy since I can't see my screen at all right now," but I ignored it.

I return my gaze to the inside of the car. There, time simply passes by, with no events of notice.

I look at the timetable given to me, and see that it's not long until we arrive.

The scenery outside had all become that of a city. Several buildings of moderate height lined up amongst each other, and on the streets were numbers of cars passing each other.

Lex continued typing away at something on her computer.

Orie: (It seems like she's concentrating, I'm sure she hasn't realized we're close to our stop…)

I'm sure I could trust her, but it'd be a problem if we missed our stop.

On the black screen I'd been able to glance at from time to time were green 0's and 1's… It was a world I didn't understand. I wonder sometimes what this girl does…

Orie: Lex, our stop is almost coming up, right? We should get ready to get off.

Lex: Yeah, you're right… I was so involved with my work I almost forgot. It's just about that time, isn't it?

Lex closes her computer, and begins to put away the rest of her work equipment.

Lex: I think I can concentrate on work better in transit. Maybe I should just be in transit all the time.

Orie: No. Get off, please.

In perfect timing, the speakers announced the next stop, Kanzakai. Seems like this is our stop.

Lex: All right, Orie. Are you ready? You haven't forgotten anything?

Orie: I'm not a child, don't worry. You be careful not to forget your bag full of work either, okay?

Lex: D-Don't even joke about that…

We check our seats and luggage again. It doesn't seem like we forgot anything.

The train slows down as it nears the station

Lex: Let's go.

Orie: Right.

(All right. There's no use worrying any more than this. Let's go, Orie Harada.)

(This is the town that will be the stage for my next mission.)

(This isn't the start of just any mission. It's a personal battle of my own, too…)

(I'll take my first step toward it, here…)

Bg04 02

The long journey was finally over. After getting off the train, passing through the turnstiles, and getting to an open area of the station, I found myself suprised at the sheer size of it.

The size itself isn't something uncommon, but this crowd… I don't think I can walk through it.

Orie: We're supposed to exit from #2, so…we should be good here. Yeah, this is it?

Lex: …We won't need that guide for the route from here. Just follow me.

Orie: Oh… Yeah, that's right.

Lex had been here in this town before myself. It seems like she'd already become used to the area around here. I felt ashamed staring at the guide map in the mission documents so seriously.

This place with the strange object and the clock. It seems like people would use this place often to meet, at Kanzakai station. There were many people standing around the area.

Lex: All right, first off…

Orie: First?

Lex: Are you hungry?

Orie: I suppose I am a bit, yeah…

Lex: I see. Well, there's not much use standing around, let's move somewhere close by. There's a cafe around here with great cakes.

Orie: Nice, Lex! You know what to do?

Lex: *Giggle*. Let's get going then, we'll be walking just a bit…

Chapter 2[]

Bg04 03

We walked along a busy street outside of the station.

Luckily we were able to send our extra luggage ahead of us to Licht Kreis beforehand..

Which made it easier to take in the unfamiliar city and the different culture. as Lex and I talked on the way to our destination.

Orie: Hmm… It looks like so much effort was put into the design of these buildings, it's such a shame it's overshadowed by all this signage.

Gaudy signs in mostly primary colors lined the streets.

Lex: Yeah… At first glance, it looked really similar, but places like these make you realize it's definitely an Asian country.

Lex walked a little bit ahead of me, her skirt swaying with each step. I was a bit curious about what she was wearing, ever since we were on the train.

Orie: Hey, I was curious, is that the Licht Kreis uniform you're wearing?

The school that was under the direction of the Licht Kreis, according to my documentation, underwent a redesign a year ago, and the uniforms got quite a bit cuter.

I'll have to wear this outfit as well, and go to another school.

Lex: Yeah, it is. Pretty cute, right? It's easy to move in.

Lex spun around to give me a better look..

It was a sailor uniform, with white and blue as the base and gold accessories around the belt and arms. The colors really gave it a Licht Kreis feel.

Orie: …Why are you wearing it, though?

Lex: Oh, this was just made as a sample. I thought I'd test it out and wear it for a while so we'd know if there were any issues with it before giving it to you.

I didn't really like working in jerseys all the time anyway. People kept saying I look like a really hard worker with them on.

…I see, so that's why.

I circled Lex to get a closer look at the uniform.

Orie: It is cute, but the skirt's really short. I'd feel uncomfortable wearing it… *Sigh*…. I just don't think I'll be able to get used to this.

This is just the sort of thing that's the opposite of Licht Kreis. I suppose this arrangement was a compromise with modern trends.

Lex: Yeah. In my opinion, I think our Licht Kreis uniforms are too long.

Orie: Really? You're not bothered that it's so short? E-Even if you had something on under it…

Lex: Hang on, this is a style that's super easy to move around in, like Mika's. Long skirts like yours get caught on all sorts of things, and I always felt like it was a hindrance when it came to combat…

She's right, our Licht Kreis skirts, both the school uniform and the combat uniform, all go down past the thigh.

Though there were many combat uniforms that were customized to everyone's style.

Some preferred shorter lengths to move around more, and some even had a mini-style like Mika's. Of course, I preferred longer skirts.

Orie: Increased mobility is important, but so is maintaining a proper image.

Lex: That's just like you… Well, we do have a choice to an extent, it's best for everyone to just choose the clothes that fit them best.

I left your clothes in the room you'll be staying in. Make sure the size is right. You wouldn't want to show any ankle.

Orie: Geez, stop teasing me. I do think shorter skirts are cute, too… As long as they're not too short.

Lex: Hahaha. All right, we're almost at the shop. Here.

Lex's pace slowed to a stop, and we found ourselves in front of a seemingly plain cafe.

I was a bit surprised that this place was Lex's suggestion. I thought it would be something more suspicious-looking, like a meeting place for a secret rendezvous.

On the sign out in front of the shop, cute lettering spelled out, "Today's Sweet Treats!" with a varied menu underneath it.

Autumn Fruit Tart, Chestnut and Pumpkin Tart, Sweet Potato Mont Blanc, Simple Shortcake, and a number of mouth-watering parfaits…

Orie: Wow…there are so many tasty-looking items. I'm so excited!

Lex: Right? Let's go inside.

Bg04 04

We opened the door and headed in. The bittersweet aroma of coffee wafted through the air, accompanied by quiet music.

The inside of the shop was lively, and adorned with pretty potted flowers and herbs. It passed my high standards. I felt I could finally be at ease.

Around us, the shop was filled mostly with women, wives with their children enjoying the afternoon, and girls on their way home from school.

Though busy, it seemed there were still seats open for us to sit down without waiting. It gave the place an even higher score.

As we waited near the entrance to the shop, an employee walked toward us.

Lex: Two, please. Orie, are the seats by the window okay instead of further in?

Lex held up two fingers for the female employee while she spoke.

The employee gestured toward the back, but Lex asked instead for the window seats near the entrance.

There were fewer people around, and she seemed motivated against drawing eyes or ears toward us.

Orie: Yeah, your choice, Lex.

It's the same as when we were on the train. We often spoke about confidential work matters, which was fine earlier when we were alone, but that wouldn't be the case here.

Especially nowadays, when information can be picked up and spread in an instant. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

The background noise of the street couldn't help us inside this calm, relaxing place.

I know we could overthink things at times, but we couldn't help it. It was important to always be on the lookout.

Orie: Hm?

As I looked around the cafe, I felt a strange presence. Eyes that were deliberately looking our way. The feeling of being watched.

Of course, it wasn't that our eyes were meeting anyone else's. It was a feeling of someone's consciousness masking us.

What was it? Was it from somewhere further away? I couldn't imagine anyone in this cafe doing that…

Lex: Orie, those seats look good. …What's wrong?

Orie: No… It's nothing.

As we moved toward our seats, I tried to locate the owner of that gaze.

Orie: (It doesn't seem like Lex is worried. …Did she just not notice? Maybe it was just someone that happened to glance our way for a moment…)

There is a high probability that Lex was ignoring it because it was a pain.

I looked around the cafe just in case, but couldn't find any suspicious activity.

I didn't feel completely relaxed, but there was no use thinking about it anymore. I took off my coat and sat down.

There was no one in the immediate vicinity. This was the best position to be in.

A waitress came by to bring us water, then handed us a couple of menus. Lex spread out some papers that looked like more work documents.

She was ready to stay here a while.

Lex: Now then, have you heard the basics of our mission?

Lex began talking rather normally.

Even though we shouldn't be heard, it would draw just as much attention to whisper to each other secretively.

As long as we kept an eye out in general, it would be enough. Even if people heard tidbits, they would probably just think we were talking about some manga or anime.

Orie: Yeah… I was told to get the details from you here, but they gave me the general gist.

For a moment, I thought to mention the strange feeling I had earlier of being watched, but I pushed it out of my mind and focused on what Lex had to say.

Lex: I see. Then I'll just go over it again to confirm with you.

Lex is normally a pretty mellow person, but it's times like these when the glasses come on and she takes control of work.

Lex: Ages ago, when the Licht Kreis advanced into Japan, they were forced to retreat by the Voids here at the time, whom we call In-births today.

After that, we had special orders not to interfere here, but lately the increase in EXS-related incidents have been of concern, particularly over the past year.

Orie: Right… And so we were dispatched here to find out what was happening, or if it could even be resolved, right?

A mission with no clear resolution… It was what struck me the most when the mission was first handed to me.

This sort of vague directive was unusual for me. Get an idea of what was happening, then report it…

It was strange that they didn't expect us to be able to resolve the situation.

Lex: Yeah… That's about it. The Licht Kreis doesn't exactly have authority around here.

Not only that, but people don't even know who we are. "The Licht Kreis" may as well be a burger joint.

Orie: Ahaha… I guess the name could be thought of as a restaurant to some.

Lex: Yeah, well that's the situation. There may be a number of Wielders who would know us. Just be sure to keep that in mind.

Orie: Got it.

Lex: Next, living arrangements. There's a room rented out near the branch. You'll be living there for a while.

Orie: Right, thanks. It's reassuring to know that everyone at the branch is nearby.

Lex: We were able to secure a relatively large room for you, so if it's possible, I'd like to live there too, while we're here. I'll support you as best as I can. Don't hesitate to ask for anything.

Orie: Sure, and I think we have a good enough grasp of the culture here. I guess what I'm most concerned about is the length of time we're staying.

I understood the language and the culture, and it's not like I couldn't eat or drink anything here.

Lex: That's true. Our mission this time has no clear end. Just assimilate into the school and get as much information as you can from people our age.

It's probably best to e-mail you the details about the school and your classes. There's too much to tell, and I don't want you to miss anything.

Orie: Okay. …Oh, but my cell phone doesn't work here. Were you able to find out how I can make contact from my end?

If there's some sort of form or something that will take some time to process, we should do it soon…

Lex: Ah, there's no need to worry about that. Use this for now.

She rummaged through her bag and tossed something over to me.

It was a new cell phone. Why would she throw this?! That was close…

Orie: Thanks. I knew you'd have something ready.

Lex's expression basically said, "Of course I did."

It would be a pain to carry around two phones all the time, so I guess I would just be using this one for a while. I would have to be sure to let Kaguya know of my new number, too.

Lex: You were just thinking, "I'll give Kaguya my number!" huh? Don't worry, I already told her.

Orie: I knew it. Prepared as always, Lex!

Wait, was that her impression of me? I don't talk like that!

Lex: As for Mika… She can't be contacted since she's on probation, so don't try for a while…

Orie: I-I expected as much…

Well, I suppose it's lucky that she even made it here…

Lex: Also, are you sure you have your story straight? You'll be in a completely average school, a bit of a ways away from here. We should go take a look at it together.

Orie: Yeah, you're right. That sounds good.

Lex: Saying you're an exchange student stands out a bit. If you make any mistakes, just say you got confused from transferring around so much. No one should question it.

I had gone to schools in Japan a number of times in the past, But there were times I'd absent-mindedly let something slip, and have a tough time covering it up.

Transferring around a bunch… I'd have to remember that as a fallback, just in case…

Orie: (Back then, I was only there for short periods at a time…)

It'd be difficult to fabricate information about my daily life here. Even more so with relationships, like friends and school life.

Orie: Still, it's a bit unusual that there's a school with connections to Licht Kreis.

Lex: Not interfering with this country just pertains to the work we do in the background. The charity group at the forefront needs to build an economic relationship with this country.

People here seem to like ideas like "justice" and "the light." We should be able to sell them on us easily enough.

Lex let out an ominous snicker. I saw an intense glint in her eyes, like dollar signs…

Lex: We originally used that approach… but the market research hasn't been that great, and the Licht Kreis has been having a bit of trouble…

Orie: I see… I don't know much about our public image here. What is the current state of In-births in this area?

Lex: About half a year ago, it seems there was a mini-boom of In-births, and a portion of them realized the significance of their power, which led to them creating their own organizations.

One, maybe two large ones. Fortunately, it seems like they haven't made any huge movements as a group.

The issue is something else… There are some who have been honing their strength at an alarming speed. It seems like someone by the name of Paradox is causing trouble on a daily basis.

Orie: Paradox…

Lex: Just from the rumors, it seems she's a fairly combative troublemaker. Most importantly, it seems like she's mobilizing toward the goal of becoming a Re-birth… Scary.

Showoffs with no ability were of little concern, but someone like this person seems to have the power to support something more sinister.

Lex: Right now, it's more accurate to think of her as an individual causing trouble. She's ambitious, and has lots of charisma, and if she's clever, she'll cause more trouble in the future…

An organization like this growing rapidly would definitely be a problem.

Lex: That's all we have, but the danger surrounding Paradox is too great. Don't get near her, no matter what. I'd even suggest averting your eyes to her activities completely.

Orie: I understand she's dangerous, but… do we need to be that wary of her? If she's that much of a threat, then even if it costs my life, I'll…

Lex: No, no matter how hard it is for you, just leave her alone, or you'll only die a meaningless death. You know that being able to escape and report back is important, too.

Orie: That is true, but…

Of course, there would be no point to all this if the one entrusted with this mission were to go down. That I understood.

However, if there was someone with her power causing trouble, people could get hurt. That was the one thing I couldn't ignore…

Orie: (It would be inconsiderate to Lex if I… No, even if it went against Licht Kreis's orders. If it came to it…)

Even if I were to die, I would have to stop her…

Lex: You have to understand that. Of course, I leave the final call up to you on the front lines.

Orie: Got it… I'll act as carefully as possible.

That was all I could say in response, because I couldn't promise that I'd escape no matter what the circumstances.

Lex: I hope so. Your duties are important, but there are a lot of people who'll be waiting for you to come back. Don't forget that, either…

Orie: There's not much else I can say when you put it like that.

Lex: Now then, lastly… About your family. The parents that you asked about…

Orie: Just… not yet…

Lex:

I answered her so quickly, Lex looked uneasy. I shouldn't have said that after she went to the trouble of investigating.

Lex: Well, actually, I couldn't figure out much. It was ten years ago, after all. Licht Kreis's information sources in Japan aren't too strong.

Orie: Right. Yeah, don't worry about it. I am a bit relieved you didn't figure anything out…

Lex: Just, let me say this… so you aren't shaken if you come across it.

Orie: …?

Lex: Recently, Licht Kreis received information that there's a Void here in Japan that can understand human speech…

Orie: What?!

My parents' killer. A Void that could understand human speech…

Lex: Listen carefully. Well, it's an unverified rumor as far as we're concerned, and there may be no point in mentioning it now…

But there have been eyewitness accounts of a Void around here recently. Given the sudden increase in Voids and the frequency of Nights, it's our guess as to whether there's a connection.

Orie: A Void that can understand human speech. Here…

Lex: Orie, calm down. Are you okay?!

A Void that can understand human speech.

Normally, Voids take on the appearance of a small snake, with only the intelligence and hunger of a beast's.

Anything smaller and weaker than that takes on the shape of pudgy jelly, but for the most part, Voids are snake-like things, and highly aggressive.

These snakes, by taking in EXS, can grow into a larger body. They gain limbs and take on a form closer to that of a human.

The ones at the top are those who can understand humans.

The shape I saw, when my parents were attacked. The voice I heard… That horrible memory…

A deep, dark, and tremendously large human form…

I'm unsure of how it started and ended, since I was so young. However, this… I remember…

That black shadow was… my…

Orie: Urk…

I tightened my fist at the despicable memory I didn't want to recall.

Lex: …Come on, don't look so scary. We're not sure what it is yet. And there's not much to this Void understanding human speech.

It's smart enough to detect danger from humans, and run away. That's it. There's no use in thinking too deeply about it…

Orie: *Sigh*…

I let out the sigh I had been holding back from thinking so hard. Slowly, my body calmed itself down.

Lex was right. It was a good head's up, but it wouldn't do any good to think about it right now.

Orie: You're right. Sorry…

Lex: Don't worry. Sorry for bringing it up so suddenly.

Orie: No, I'm thankful you did, Lex. I would have been more surprised if I didn't know about it. I feel much more prepared now that I heard about it beforehand.

A past I didn't want to remember. Lex had seen my grim expression after recalling it.

Orie: Great, more proof that I don't have control over my emotions at all yet.

(If I had suddenly come across this talking Void in battle, …that hesitation might have been lethal.)

Lex: All this about the Void and your parents aren't directly related to the mission, but so long as we're here, I can't say they're unrelated, either.

I'll do everything I can to solve this.

Orie: Right. Thank you, Lex.

Lex: Don't worry about it. We've all encountered the same sort of thing. I understand your feelings all too well…

Orie: Lex…

Lex too, huh…

Those of us in the Licht Kries came from similar circumstances. I can't be the only one crying about it…

Orie: (Agh, stop it. I started crying a bit…)

I covered myself with my hand to hide it, but it was probably obvious.

Lex: …All right, that should be all of it. Let's leave it at that. All the dark, unpleasant talk, and all the work talk can be postponed for now. We'll wrap things up here.

We went over a lot of the mission details. Most of it, in fact, so you should be fine. If there was anything left out, just ask me out on the field whenever you need to.

Orie: Right. Got it.

Lex then put away the documents about the mission in her bag. It looked like she really was done talking about work.

Lex: Let's take a break now. The cake I'd recommend here is…

Lex opened up her menu.

Quite a bit of time had passed since we entered the cafe. I'd gotten a bit of an appetite, and was curious about the cakes they had.

But… I couldn't open my menu, There were still questions I had in my mind.

Orie: Hey, Lex? I have one thing I want to ask before we order.

Lex: Hm? What is it? I won't talk about work anymore. It's past work hours…

Orie: No. About that feeling of being watched… that menacing aura? You have any idea where it's from?

Lex: Yeah. That waitress has probably been waiting for us to order all this time. We were so wrapped up in talking, and we haven't had anything but water since coming in.

Orie: That's not what I mean.

I was aware of the waitress waiting for us as well, but I'm sure she figured we weren't ready to order at all…

Orie: (I got pretty focused as well during the latter half of the conversation…)

Lex: Yeah. I know. I don't really want to talk about it since it'll just come back to work.

I did think about bringing it up, but it's a pain noticing it. I want something sweet first…

Like Lex says, the meanacing aura did feel like just a bit of weak pressure from somewhere.

Something non-threatening that could just be left alone. Still, the sensation was palpable and sort of intrusive…

There was one possibility.

Orie: Yeah, I know… This seething sensation, though. Do you think she could be here in Japan…?

Lex: Yeah… You sense that burden, too…

Lex beat around the bush, gazing far ahead and looking as if she didn't want to bring it up because it would be a pain to discuss,

Lex: The Crimson Knight, Wagner

Orie: (Of course…)

Lex: I heard rumors that she was deployed here around the same time, maybe a bit earlier than we were. I suspected the owner of that sensation was her.

Orie: Deployed…? I figure there would be more of an explanation to this all in that case… Is it even possible that it could just be a rumor?

Lex: R-Right, about that… Geez, how much should I tell you…? I'm not sure what to say, since I don't know how much I should tell you…

Orie: Huh? What is it? I don't hear much about her…

The Crimson Knight, one of the most famous names within the Licht Kreis. There was no end to the rumors circulating her work…

Lex: Well, she's the same age as us, and we encounter each other pretty often. That's all. Especially you, Orie.

Orie: Right… Why did Adelheid and the personnel office have me and the Crimson Knight come here at the same time…?

If investigating were the objective, she'd be useless. If neutralization were the objective, she alone would suffice. There's no reason why the both of us would need to work together.

Lex: I don't know of the details, either. According to the rumors, she's supposed to be on probation as well, and is under restricted activity as an Executor, in particular when it comes to combat.

Orie: Right… I think the reason for that was she went a little too wild in the past…

I heard a bit about it. Her over-aggressiveness has always been a problem.

Lex: Yeah. Right now she's on probation, under direct orders from Adelheid. I suppose she was dispatched to the same place you were, in case she were to go crazy again.

As far as the organization's concerned, you two are regarded as the top two that'll lead the next generation. Why not look after her more, as her senior in life?

Orie: I'm no senior to her. I'm not any older than her! Wh-Why do I have to be the one that looks after her…?

(Considering our positons, she's higher up than I am, after all… I don't have any authority to teach her anything!)

It wasn't as if I were close with her and knew what her personality was actually like… But I heard she was a young woman from a powerful, well-known family, who knew nothing of the world.

There was a high possibility of her complicating situations, just because of that. No one would want to have to keep watch over someone like that.

Orie: (She also seems to be eyeing me as her rival for some reason, and always acts stuck up and angry around me…)

Lex: The Licht Kries works isolated from the world, so some people like her have no clue how the world works. It would be reassuring if someone with better sense were to look after her.

If she gets another red card during her probation, it's over. I don't think she'd do anything that crazy though, she does have her family's honor to uphold. Just go talk to her…

Orie: Th-Then, why don't you watch over her?

I just knew she was pushing her on me with that kind of logic.

Lex: What you say will have some weight to her, as her rival. I don't think she would listen to me or anyone else.

Orie: Urgh…

I couldn't say anything in reply. She was right about that. But wouldn't it be even harder for her rival to try and control her?!

Lex: Well, dealing with her isn't part of the mission. I'll leave the final decision on what to do up to you…

Orie: (The Crimson Knight sent here to Japan on probation.)

(To watch over her means to carry out this mission with her.)

(And have her gain experience in order to grow mentally, and become a more solid pillar that will support Licht Kreis.)

(No, no, no, no. I could never do that.)

It's not that I didn't like her, I just didn't think that would be possible. It was a heavy burden to bear…

Orie: A-Anyways. I do think it would be unfair to her if we continued to ignore her.

Lex: It would. I wouldn't want to be treated like that. Still, a normal person would have given up vibing this evil aura at us at some point. I have to admire her tenacity…

Orie: Why is she evil now…

Fine… This mission is a lot to handle, and I don't want to be burdened with anything else, but if she's come to see me, I won't just leave her alone.

Orie: (Though, I might want to end up leaving her alone, depending on why she came to see me…)

I made my decision and stood up.

Orie: I'll go talk to her.

Lex: I see. Be careful. I think she would be calm here, but if you're the one talking to her, who knows what she'll do…

She grinned, almost as if she expected trouble already.

Lex: Well, it might not be bad for you to get into some trouble too. They say here that the land hardens from rainfall. I can imagine you two becoming lifelong friends after knocking each other out in a fight.

Orie: No way.

Lex: That's cold. I guess you two really don't get along…

Orie: Ugh, I didn't mean it like that. Before talking about liking or fighting each other, I barely even know anything about her.

Do we really look like we don't like each other? I don't think we fight or antagonize each other.

Well, even if I don't bear any hostility toward her, if she does I guess you could consider that as not getting along…

Lex: I'm just a bystander in all this, so it doesn't matter to me. Of course, it would be better if you two did get along.

All right, then. It'd be rude to the waitress if we don't order something. Is there anything you want?

I guess Lex was more worried about the wrath of the waitress. She puts in her order.

Orie: Oh, um… I'll have a tea. Lex, you can decide on the cake. Well, I'll be right back. I can bring her over, right? Let's all have tea together.

We had never really been around each other much, and what chances we did have were when missions went awry and we had to talk about complicated issues?

That's probably why people thought we were at odds with each other.

I might be able to see a charming side to her, being able to talk to her in peace outside of missions. Please let there be something like that.

Lex: Hm? Oh…. What? Tea with that…? I can't really imagine it… But, just be careful.

Chapter 3[]

Bg04 03

I step out of the shop without putting on my coat, to find the Crimson Knight.

Orie: (I'm just going to get her and come back to the shop. I won't be outside talking with her long, it'll be fine.)

Her not coming quietly, and getting involved in a heated argument… was a significant possibility.

Orie: (…All right. So I'm out here. Just where is that girl…?)

I could tell more or less in what direction and how far away she is. But… considering the crowd, and the height of the buildings. To search through all of that would be quite a laborious task.

Orie: (Well, if I move around while giving off a bit of EXS, I'm sure the she would notice…)

What I would be doing is the same thing as her gaze. To just strongly think that I'm watching her.

Just that will cause a slight change to the EXS around us. You can feel that someone's consciousness is surrounding you.

Well, I just hear that that seems to be what happens, so I'm not sure the exact workings behind it…

Orie: Hmmm…

I loosely focus my EXS and send my consciousness toward her presence. Sending her my attention, thoughts, and imagining myself calling to her…

It's really difficult gauging the delicate balance of my power, not too strong or too weak. I grow a little uncertain whether or not she's getting the message…

Orie: (Now, then… I should just have to walk around a bit.)

A large alleyway that faces the shop. I walk along a smaller path that ran behind it.

It seems like she felt my presence and is moving accordingly.

All right… Guess I'm finally going to see her here on this soil.

Orie: This will be my first test here.

Bg15 11

The back alley was a bit dark, surrounded by buildings, despite it being daytime.

It wasn't the sort of beautiful place where girls might be talking to each other, but we didn't have a choice in order not to be seen.

I checked again that there wasn't anyone around us, and turn around and call out to her.

Orie: Hello. You're there, aren't you, Void Hunter? It's pretty unexpected for us to meet here in the land to the far east.

???:

Erika: Hmph…

The Crimson Knight Erika Wagner. She's famous within the Licht Kreis, and boasts that name.

She uses the power of fire passed down to her through generations, and cuts down those who oppose the Licht Kreis with her sword.

She is unparalleled in her sense of justice, with a thorough, merciless wrath toward those who use EXS wrongly. Her name is the source of much fear…

Even Adelheid holds absolute confidence in her strength, and considering her long history of achievements, her influence is strong within the Licht Kreis.

No one would argue if she were to be called the Licht Kreis itself. That's how much authority her family name holds…

Orie: (A person with such high esteem came all this way to meet the likes of me. I wonder what she wants…)

Perhaps a uniform from this land, she wrapped herself in a new, red cloth, and gazes at me in a dignified posture.

I could see that there were two girls standing just behind her. They were likely attendants to the Crimson Knight.

They could be there to aid her. Or to monitor her. …Or maybe both.

Orie: So, what do you want with me? I'm sure you're busy, so it would be ridiculous to think that you'd be tailing Lex waiting to ambush her. and I'm sure…you're not here to give me a welcoming party.

Erika: Orie Valadier… You're terrible at joking. If you'd like a welcoming party, I could give you a fireworks show… Would you like that?

She speaks with a clear majesty in her voice, while giving a bold smile. But in her expression…I could sense that she was really happy.

Orie: You're not very good at jokes, either it seems.

Erika: Of course I'm not…

It hasn't been many days since I've come here. I was looking around the city, walking around where many people were gathered, when I noticed you two. So, I just decided to greet you, that's all.

Orie: I see… Thank you. I hadn't heard anything about you being here, so it did surprise me.

Still, I wish you'd do something about how you greeted us. You could've just talked to us normally.

Erika: I know just how distant we are from each other, if you didn't notice. Actually, I'd even thought you noticed, but were just ignoring me.

The Crimson Knight raises her mouth into a pout after her self-mockery. Though she has a renowned name, this side of her makes her seem much more her age as a child.

Orie: So? You greet us, and came all this way out to respond to my call, which means you have something to talk about, right? What is it?

A short silence dominates the area. I guess… that she has some deep reasoning, that she can't easily mention.

Erika: R-Right…

*Sigh*…

Uum… *Cough*

Wh-Why is she being so obviously hesitant…?

Erika: Though… it does pain me to have to ask you…

Orie: Not at all. It's no trouble at all. Don't worry at all and ask all you want. Oh, that's right. If you want to talk, how about you come back with me to the cafe we're at?

I was about to mention they had delicious cakes… when she suddenly interrupts me.

Erika: A-A place where there are others wouldn't be good…. No, not good.

Orie: Oh, sorry. I see…

She's right, we would need to speak up in that case… It wouldn't be good if it was noisy around us. I wasn't thinking things through.

The two girls behind her raise their hands in fists, as if mentally wishing, "Erika, hang in there," and, "Erika, you can do this."

Orie: (Th-Those two behind her seem like they're having fun. I guess they're all really close.)

While I was distracted by the two charming girls in the back, the Crimson Knight's closed mouth showed no sign of opening.

Orie: …Erika?

Erika: …I-I…

Orie: …You?

She manages to say the word I before closing her mouth again.

She lets out a deep sigh, with her head hung… I-Is this really that serious? I wonder if Lex should be here too, and not just me.

I wonder what it is… All I could do now is wait to hear what she has to say.

Orie:

A short silence.

And then, as if finally gathering up her determination, taking a deep breath in, the her lips began to move.

Erika: …Th-The reason why I was brought here…

Orie: Yes?

Erika: The reason! The reason! Say it! You know why, don't you?!

Orie: Wh--? What?!

(What does she mean she wants me to tell her why she came here to Japan?!)

Erika: Hey… do you understand what I just asked? I'm telling you to tell me why I was sent to Japan! Just what is this situation? Why do I have to ask this from the likes of you?

Erika turns red, and looks away.

Orie: (There's no way I would understand if you haven't already!)

The reason why Erika was given this mission. Do I know that reason…?

The two girls attending her were joyously flailing their hands in a dance, as if to say, "Congratulations, you did it!"

Orie: The reason why you were sent here…? D-Don't tell me you didn't know the outline of the mission before you came here, did you?

Erika glances to the side at me, as I'd hit the mark. My thoughts came to a halt, unable to understand the situation. The two aides behind her gesture, "Yes, that's right, so please explain it to her."

All of their various expectations are coming to a point here, it seems…

Orie: (…There's no reason to involve me in this!)

(I wish she'd come after having a thorough conversation about this, between the one giving the mission, Erika herself, and if necessary, those two behind her!)

Erika began to speak again, unable to endure the silence.

Erika: The content of the mission… Right, I haven't been told them. The only thing Adelheid told me was to talk to Orie and pick it up from her And that's what I'm doing. So, speak.

Orie: (What's with that vague assignment?! Are you all right with this, Adelheid?! You too, Silvaria?!)

…Ugh, my head hurts.

Still… Seeing how her aides are enjoying this, it seems like the act of coming to ask me itself, may be the objective.

According to Lex, this girl is under probation.

She was ordered by Adelheid to come here, and she was ordered to go on a mission, separate from her probation, and only told to talk to me about it.

Orie: (Still, no one's told me about this at all. Just what are you thinking, Adelheid…?)

Erika: Now then, do you have something that will give me a sense of things…? Come on, let me feel it…

Orie: Don't say it so weirdly.

I need to calm myself down from this sudden turn of events…

Orie: (Just what is this, Adelheid… Did you plan for me to see what adversity I can overcome as some sort of mental training…?)

I close my eyes and take a deep breath.

Orie: *Sigh*…

In front of me stands a descendant from the a family well established within the Licht Kreis, Erika Wagner. This noble girl, caught up in this ridiculous… No, wait, she is serious about this.

I had always thought that she was just a strange girl at heart…

Though it's a bit ridiculous, I guess I just have to be serious about this, and give her an explanation.

With renewal comes pain. It's just like what Lex said before, about how the earth firms with rainfall.

I ready myself and speak my thoughts.

Orie: …Listen, Erika Wagner. Someone so lowly as me probably doesn't have the answer that you seek.

You're a well distinguished person who will come to lead the Licht Kreis. I'm sure people would understand most of what you do, without your needing to tell them.

Erika:

Orie: Your strength. Your position as the Sword. Of course I understand that. However, cutting down all that come across will only lead you to a burnt field. I'm sure even you understand that is a problem.

Risking your life in battle. Knowing that pity will lead to death. I understand that harsh action must be made at times. However, you did overdo it just a bit with the incident a few days ago…

At this rate, you…no, we the Licht Kreis would likely be considered a grim reaper of the night that kills anyone in sight.

Your name, the Wagner lineage. And the fear over its future. Not only that, but for the Licht Kreis, for justice…

I believe Adelheid ordered you to come to Japan and talk with me, in order to broaden your horizons.

If seeing me and being with me might change you. That, I don't know. However, there is meaning behind talking and exchanging ideas, thinking and worrying together.

…Hey, Erika. I know we haven't talked much, but I do want to take this as an opportunity to get closer. I'd like you to think about that, and change accordingly, okay?

Erika:

As I thought, she looks deeply troubled.

Though I do hope she understands. But she is an odd one, I'm worried she'll lash out instead making this have the opposite effect.

Erika: …Ridiculous.

Orie: Huh? What?

Erika: I said this is ridiculous. Of course I understand that. The only thing that can resolve everything in the end is strength. Kill or be killed. That's all there is to it.

My body is a sword. My existence is only to cut down the enemies of the Licht Kreis. I know you understand that as well.

Orie: Of course I do. I don't have any argument against that. The issue is, you are our sword, not the Grim Reaper's scythe.

A sword is a blade used to protect those important to you. Something that cuts down all that it touches, isn't a sword.

Erika: I've been told that more than enough. I see you're not above making such lip service either. I'm a bit disappointed, Orie Valadier.

Would I be forgiven if I cut people down in hesitation, regret and sorrow? Of course not. That's why I do exactly what I was taught in my role. To simply slash and burn.

You think I go overboard because I don't understand this? Don't make me laugh. I'm thorough about my executions because I understand what it is I'm doing…. That is everything…

She bares her anger on her face. With it, is the sensation of her EXS increasing.

She isn't armed with any weapons, but the heat coming from her fists rises like a wave of heat.

She seemed like she was about to explode. If she wished it, she could turn everything around her into a sea of flames, even in broad daylight and not during the night.

This is the ability passed down through her family, the Flame Tyrant. This was the first time I've seen it so closely and clearly.

Of course, she was just threatening me. I didn't feel like she would actually think to fight me, an ally of hers, in the middle of the city.

…I think. I-I'll just assume that's the case.

Orie: (E-Erika… You mustn't want to fight…right?)

Of course, that's only what I wished.

…Still, observing it so closely, even if you consider she isn't being serious about it, her EXS is still very intense.

These flames she inherited were certainly impressive. The never-extinguishing embers and a power so limitless, she's even chastised for it..

Even with all that, I can't back down. To have a proper conversation with her is what Adelheid wishes for.

That is the order given to me. …No, not an order, but what I want to do, myself.

Orie: …Calm down, Crimson Knight Erika Wagner. We mustn't be fighting.

I'm sorry if I caused any offense. However, all I've said and done is for your sake. Please forgive me.

Hearing that, Erika takes a deep sigh.

Like a blown up balloon that slowly shrunk in size, I could tell that the EXS that had been building wildly, started to subside.

She had stopped being on guard. I'm mostly just relieved that she calmed down…

Erika: Hmph… You don't need to tell me that. That was just a greeting to you, as part of my mission here. A flame of blessing.

But don't forget. I don't intend to be too friendly with you. I'll settle the score with you, someday…

Orie: Yes. Once this is all over, I'll gladly accept your challenge. Though…I'm not all too happy about it, personally…

Erika: I would like nothing more to turn your unsightly presence into a mound of ash, but Adelheid has prohibited me from any personal quarrels. My sword and shield are being kept by those two, as well.

She was referring to the two on-lookers behind us.

They made X's with their arms, a sign that she wasn't allowed to use her weapons in that moment.

Erika: Of course, I wouldn't fall behind you if I were to fight without them. I would simply be lacking a bit of elegance in doing so. I'd like to have at you at my best.

Eventually…the time will come when I must go to battle. Until then, you will have to make do alone, Orie Valadier.

Huh…. I see. She just told me that she can't fight right now, and because of that, can't aid me as well.

Erika: I do pray that you don't do anything unnecessary and get yourself killed. Even you are an important asset to us, the Licht Kreis. Be sure not to cause me any trouble by giving me more work.

Orie: Yeah, yeah… You just wanted to turn this important asset to ash just now. What are you even talking about…?

So not to be ridiculed by you. And not to suffer a premature end. I'll be sure to stay focused.

Erika: Q-Q-Quiet. You don't need to answer to everything I say. Just stay quiet and listen.

Orie: Crimson Knight, Erika Wagner. I simply want to carry out my duties as an Executor. Though the paths we walk are different, I believe we strive for the same thing.

Even though we may have differences in what we feel, even though we may fight… And while we may not understand each other.

Erika: Hmph. How ridiculous…

I'm done talking with you. You can leave now… I might end up burning you if I have to look at you any more.

Orie: I'm not a potato. Don't go burning me on a whim…

(She doesn't understand anything I said, it seems. Well, she's not one to understand something the first time around. I'm sure she just needs some time…)

(It'd be nice if we can get along…)

It would be rude to think of it as an afterthought to the mission… But still, I should try and find a way to get along with her.

It felt like I was talking with her for a while, but found not much time had passed when I checked the time.

Lex, who's back at the shop… I'm sure she's just there doing work, so she'll be fine waiting.

Though…it's a bit unfortunate that it didn't seem like I could come back with Erika and have tea with her.

Orie: That's right, your clothes… Are you going to school here, too…?

I ask what I had been a bit curious about until now.

Erika: Huh, now that's a frivolous topic to bring up. We're not that close.

Orie: What's the matter? You don't have time for a bit more of a chat before we leave?

Erika: Hmph… I'm conducting research on social customs while on probation. As you guessed, I've been made to attend a school for experience. I find it quite the pain, but this is still work…

Though I could tell in her eyes, she didn't quite dislike it.

Erika: By going to this school, I'll have satisfied Adelheid's true intentions for me, and will rid myself of this probation as quickly as possible.

She ended her speech, and opened up a tourist map.

Orie: (Th-This isn't quite the way I'd normally picture her…)

Even just seeing this unusual side of her makes my meeting with her today worth the effort.

Erika: Let's go, Murayama, Sakurai. Orie Valadier, we'll meet again soon…

Orie: Yes. It's unfortunate we couldn't have tea together. Another time, then.

Erika: Hmph, tea with you? What a joke. I hope your tea boils over your cup…

Orie: Ah, I see… Then, if you don't come next time, I'll have considered you to have run away.

I think I've gotten a handle on how to control her.

Erika: What…? I promise you I'll come. I hope you're ready for your defeat…

With a smile, she slowly leaves. Her two attendants gesture goodbye to me and leave with her.

Orie: (…I don't want to be ready for my defeat while having tea, though.)

But, she really isn't a bad girl, is she…

Chapter 4[]

Bg04 04

Orie: *Sigh*… Being so careful around her exhausted me…

Returning to the cafe, I felt the tense feeling from facing Erika melt away, and suddenly felt exhausted.

I slump into my chair, and take a sip of the tea that Lex ordered.

It was a bit lukewarm, but perfect for me in my current state. I was thirsty, so I'd just burn myself if it were too hot…

Lex: I see you're all right, Orie. You seem pretty tired, though… So, how was she?

Orie: Right, nothing unusual. She just noticed us here in the same place on a mission, so she just wanted to greet us. It had been a while, so we got to talking a bit.

Lex had ordered cheesecake. Its penetrating sourness, and deep sweetness… It felt like I was biting into pure happiness.

Orie: Ifs huud…

Lex: *Giggle* I'm glad you like it. If there were any other cakes you were curious about, go ahead and order them.

I open the menu and see several other charming sweets. The pictures look so pretty. Ahhh, I want to order them all…

Orie: *Sigh*… All right, I'll take you up on that and order some more♪

Lex: Yeah, go ahead… That's right. I got a call in just now. It seems like they've given permission to Mika.

By permission, she means that HQ had given permission to Mika to act freely after being put on house arrest.

Orie: Huh? Really? Did Mika pass her re-test?

(There was a simple test in order to decide who would come here for this mission. Mika said she was so excited, and hurried through it. Her answers were all off by one, and was the only one that failed.)

(That test was so easy. That girl…)

(The upper ranks never imagined someone would actually fail that test, but the protocol mandated that she couldn't be sent out, and she caused plenty of trouble for people…)

(And that was Mika's situation up until now, under the pretense that she would just be late in coming here, she was put on house arrest as a part of her punishment.)

Still, that sure was quick. Maybe she put on a really good act of being sorry…

Lex: Seems like she was so obnoxious they had to let her go.

Orie: I-I see…

Lex: Well, she did only fail a written test. She wouldn't be put under any sort of extreme punishment. I'm sure being left behind was punishment enough for her. I'm glad we can meet up with her soon.

They'll probably just keep an eye on her for a few more days. But knowing Mika, she might find a way to extend her house arrest somehow, so we shouldn't get our hopes up…

Orie: R-Right…

It seems like she won't be able to be here for a bit longer… For some reason, that's the opinion I was under.

Lex: That being the case, we'll be acting by ourselves for a little while longer… Though, the one actually taking action will be you alone. Until the time comes, just enjoy immersing yourself into the school.

Orie: You know I can't just enjoy myself. I have to be serious about this.

Lex: You don't need to be so anxious about it. It's a short, precious period of time to experience being an adolescent girl. I hope you spend it wisely…

Smiling, Lex drinks her cafe au lait.

Orie: (A regular adolescent girl, huh…)

To take in different experiences and hold a greater worldview. This is what Adelheid and Sylvaria had always told me.

Engaging in battles and mission like the Crimson Knight might only serve to skew that worldview.

Orie: (The Blade of the Licht Kreis. The family name. It all felt so heavy to me, tied by family virtues and duty…)

Thinking of things in that sense though, makes me feel like Lex has a point about enjoying myself.

Maybe Adelheid had even thought that far ahead, dispatched us to Japan…or not.

There's so much to think about…

So much I have to think about.

I'll think about it.

In my position right now, I have a responsibility to think it all through.

…However, I don't have time to be doing that right now.

Orie: (I have to think about these cakes!)

Hmn… Oh, excuse me, I'd like to order something.

I need to cherish this.

These small moments of happiness with friends.

The moments I have right now…

-----[]

Orie: Going into battle as an Executor, into the Hollow Night. I was picked up by the Licht Kreis. I'll have no regrets if I were to die at any time.

That's what I'd thought all this time…

But, I'm sure it's no good to only have those thoughts all the time.

I know there's no answer to that. I know there's no knowing what's right.

I just have to keep moving forward…

This mission, to live life as a fellow classmate at this school. I wonder what I'll discover, and how I'll change…

Story-cg10

(I wonder who I'll meet along the way. I won't know that now.)

(But I'm sure that Adelheid had given me time to touch upon these things, through giving me this mission.)

(I was ready for this, but I knew this would be an important mission, after all…)

(The expectations and unease from living as a school student. This will be different from the fight against the night and the Voids.)

(But, it'll be fine. No matter what happens, I'll overcome it.)

(My duties as part of the Licht Kreis isn't just to defeat our enemies.)

(Friends that share in our joy, cherished comrades that walk with me. I'm sure they'll be waiting there…)

(In the future to come. I feel it'll change greatly…I think.)

(Of course, that's just how I feel. I have no evidence to support it.)

(…The road ahead will be long.)

My fight starts now, on this land…
